The Anaheim Ducks visit the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday to take on the host Ottawa Senators with faceoff scheduled for 7:35 PM ET. We preview tonight's game in hopes of finding an edge for our NHL picks.

According to current NHL betting odds the Senators are a -125 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. Anaheim has won 7 of the last 8 meetings between these two clubs.

Captain Relishes the Role

The Ottawa Senators come off an impressive 6-1 road win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. Jason Spezza continues his strong play to start the season which is his first as the team captain. Spezza scored twice in the win over Detroit giving him a team leading 7-goals in the first 9-games of the year. Bobby Ryan has proven to be a key offseason acquisition that ironically came over from tonight’s opponent the Anaheim Ducks. Ryan also scored a pair in the win over Detroit giving him 6-goals to start the year. Craig Anderson stopped 31 of 32 shots on goal in the win over Detroit. Anderson is scheduled to get the start tonight. In 7-starts this season Anderson has a 2.58 GAA and a very good .930 save percentage. This will mark just the 3rd home game of the season for the Senators who started the year by playing their first 6 on the road. Ottawa has seen just 9 of its last 37-games go over the total following a win.

The Mighty Home Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks have dominated at home this season going a perfect 5-0. However, on the road they’re just 2-3 including a pair of losses in their last 2-games at Montreal and Toronto. The Ducks squandered a 2-0 lead at Toronto on Tuesday and eventually fell 4-2 at the hands of the Leafs. Last night in Montreal they fell behind 3-0 and were never able to recover in a 4-1 loss. Jonas Hiller was in goal last night in Montreal and is scheduled to start tonight as well. Hiller is 4-2 on the season with a 2.64 GAA and a .911 save percentage. The Ducks are 7th in the NHL averaging 3.2 goals per game, and are 2nd in the league averaging 35.8 shots on goal per contest. The Ducks have gone over the total in just 17 of their last 57 road games.

Final Analysis

The Ducks are clearly not the same team on the road as they are at home. This will also be their 3rd road game in the last 4-days. The Senators will be riding the momentum of a strong effort in Wednesday’s 6-1 blowout win at Detroit. NHL history has favored the money line home favorite in this exact situation. Any home favorite of -120 to -170 playing in the 1st half of the season, versus an opponent coming off a road loss and has a winning percentage of .700 or better is an excellent 29-5 (85.3%) since the start of the 1996-1997 year. It’s the Senators at home tonight!
