The Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings are coming off a very entertaining Game 2, which might have been one of the best hockey games of the season.

It’s the type of game that sets us up for an exciting series the rest of way through.

The Ducks were a big favorite coming into this best-of-seven matchup but they are now entrenched in a dog fight without home-ice advantage. Can they steal it back in Game 3 and which way should we lean on the NHL odds

The Anaheim Ducks can win because…

They’ve had no problem scoring on Jimmy Howard in this series. The Ducks potted three goals in the opener and four in the follow up. In other words, as long as they can tighten up the defense at their end, they’ll be in good shape to take back home-ice advantage.

The Ducks fell asleep in Game 2 as they allowed the Red Wings to dictate the pace. When the younger, faster and deeper Ducks woke up, they erased a three-goal third period deficit rather easily. Now they just need to play like that the whole game – as they did in Game 1 – and they’ll get back on track on Saturday.

The Detroit Red Wings can win because…

They have the Ducks number. The Red Wings have now won three of the five meetings between the teams this season.

Anaheim is a streaky team and that’s due to the performances they get out of Jonas Hiller in net. Hiller was a train-wreck in Game 2 as he allowed a number of soft goals. The Red Wings know this and that’s why they were firing from all directions.

The Ducks must already be thinking about potentially making a change to Viktor Fasth and that can’t help in this type of situation. Detroit may have blown a lead in Game 2 but they still got the win, got home-ice advantage and got inside the Ducks heads. They should continue their dominance of them with a win in this spot.

Outlook & Pick

This has the makings of what will be a very long series, so taking Anaheim in Games 3 and 4 – as an underdog in both spots – and hoping they cash at least once makes sense. However, I see the trend of high scoring continuing. That’s why I’ll take the over with my NHL Picks

The total should really be 5.5 in this spot because three of the five meetings this season have gone over. On top of that, neither goaltender has looked particularly strong so far this series. Instead, we have a total of five with the over getting plus-money. That being the case, I’ll take the over.
