The Anaheim Ducks take to the road for their lone visit to Winnipeg this season to face the Jets at the MTS Centre on Sunday. Opening faceoff for this match is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.

Key Dates for the 2013-14 NHL Season!

According to current NHL betting odds the Jets are a -130 money line favorite and the total is posted at 5.5. Early wagering has seen 73% of the money line wagers go the way of the home favorite, and 64% of the totals wagers go on the over.

Teemu Selanne’s Swan Song

This will be 43-year old Teemu Selanne’s 21st and final season in the NHL as he will retire at the season’s end. Selanne returns to the place where he started his future hall of fame career as a member of the Winnipeg Jets. As a rookie in the 1992-1993 campaign with the Jets, the Finnish star registered 76-goals. Selanne didn’t play in last night’s game at Minnesota but will 100% assured of being in the lineup tonight. Selanne still remains one of the most popular sports figures ever in Winnipeg, and is sure to get a very warm reception this in what will likely be his last appearance of his career where it all started 21 seasons ago.

The Mighty Ducks

The Ducks opened the season by getting hammered at Colorado 6-1 in the Avalanche head coaching debut of Patrick Roy. They bounced back nicely last night with a quality win 4-3 in overtime in Minnesota. It didn’t come without some anxious moments for the Ducks. After squandering a 3-1 lead, the Ducks were able to win it in overtime on a goal by Mathieu Perrault with just 4.9 seconds to go in overtime. The Ducks acquired Perreault earlier in the week from the Washington Capitals, where he played for parts of 3 seasons under current Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau. In last night’s game, Jakob Silfverberg scored his 2nd goal of the season for the Ducks. The 22-year old Swedish right wing was part of the trade with Ottawa in the offseason that saw Bobby Ryan go to the Senators. This will be the 3rd and final game of a 3-game road trip to open the season for Anaheim. They will play their home opener this coming Thursday versus the New York Rangers.

Quick Start for the Jets

The Winnipeg Jets are off to a 2-0 start to the season after defeating the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers to start the season. The Jets will need to stay focused early in tonight’s game with all the hoopla surrounding the return of Teemu Selanne to Winnipeg. In their season opener, they overcame a 4-2 deficit and stormed back for a 5-4 win at Edmonton. The Jets came out flying in the home opener on Friday night against the Kings who are one of the Western Conference hockey betting favorites entering the season. Winnipeg stormed out to a 4-1 lead before the Kings closed the gap to 4-3 in the 3rd period. The Jets sealed the win with an empty new goal by Brian Little with 0:48 to play. Devin Setoguchi who was an offseason acquisition led the way for the Jets in Friday night’s win with 2-goals and an assist. Defensemen Dustin Byfuglien is off to a nice start to the season with 4-assists in the first 2-games.

Final Analysis

The Jets have scored 10-goals in their first 2-games of the season with both contests going over the total. The Ducks have also seen both of their games go over the total this season with each having 7-goals combined being scored. We’re seeing an early run of high scoring games with much being attributed to the reduction in size of goaltender pads. The word inside the locker rooms is goalies are still adjusting to their equipment change. Obviously the change was made this season by the NHL to do exactly what’s resulting so far and that’s more goals being scored. I have a small lean on going over the total in this game for my sports picks.
