The New Jersey Devils head out on the road to face Ottawa in a matchup of two teams that are playing well right now. Where should we place our NHL picks in this matchup, as we look for the best value on offer?

With Martin Brodeur back between the pipes, the New Jersey Devils have gotten back on track. He’s started the last two games for the Devils and they’ve won both while giving up just two goals.

Lets look at tonight's matchup between the Devils and Senators, as we share two free picks for this battle.

Record: 93-99 (-132)

The New Jersey Devils can win because…

They are back in business with Brodeur in net. The Devils had been struggling mightily with Johan Hedberg between the pipes as Brodeur was on the sidelines injured. With Brodeur back, the Devils have won two straight. They are now 10-2-3 on the season with Brodeur in net, which means they are 5-9-3 without him. That’s a big difference.

The Sens are a sluggish offensive team and while they’ve had no problems scoring recently, their outbursts came against Tampa Bay, Long Island, Winnipeg and Buffalo. None of those teams are good defensively. With Brodeur in net, the Devils should be able to control this matchup and get the win.

The Ottawa Senators can win because…

They’ve won four of their last five games. NHL odds makers have seen the Sens find their scoring touch lately as they have tallied 19 goals in their last five games. The Sens had previously been one of the lowest scoring teams in the league but now that they’re scoring, they are – obviously – doing some winning.

While that seems oversimplified, the Sens have had stellar defense and goaltending all season long. It has really been up to their offense to determine if they win and now that they are lighting the lamp, they are getting back on track.

Outlook & Pick

People making their NHL picks will probably be tempted with the under and I think that’s the play that makes sense. I’m also going to take the Devils as I think they’re the better team. They’ve played well with Brodeur in net this season and as long as he’s between the pipes on Monday, under and the Devils is the way to look.
