The New Jersey Devils were the team that represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Final last season but the Buffalo Sabres can deal their playoff hopes a serious blow on Sunday.

NHL Betting: Devils vs. Sabres Picks

The Devils have lost six straight and have fallen to 10th in the East. With just 10 games to go, they need to snap out of their funk very quickly.

Let's have a look at the NHL odds, and how these two teams match-up.

Record: 112-127 (-795)

The New Jersey Devils can win because…

Martin Brodeur plays great against the Sabres. In his last nine starts against Buffalo, Brodeur has a sparkling 1.09 GAA against them along with a pair of shutouts. For New Jersey to win, they’ll need a stellar effort from him.

For New Jersey, their defense has been great even during their current six-game losing streak. What they’ve been lacking is scoring. Sunday’s matchup looks like it’s going to be low scoring, so they might only need an ugly goal or two to get the win.

The Buffalo Sabres can win because…

The Devils are a sinking ship. New Jersey, the team that won the Eastern Conference last season, should be competing for a playoff spot right about now. Instead, they have lost six straight and nine of 11. They are an absolute trainwreck right now.

Previously, they blamed their downfall on an injury to Martin Brodeur. He’s back but they still can’t get on track. Buffalo has won two straight and should be able to add another win to the streak since New Jersey is ripe for the picking.

Outlook & Pick

The Devils are without Ilya Kovalchuk and they’ve scored just 10 goals in the six games he’s missed. Meanwhile, the Sabres are also without a top scorer as Thomas Vanek will miss Sunday’s game. Factoring that, I think the under is the best selection from this game for my NHL picks.

Pick: Under 5 at Bodog
