The New Jersey Devils will wrap-up their 2013 season this Saturday afternoon with a trip to Madison Square Garden to face-off against the New York Rangers in a classic Atlantic Division rivalry.

NHL Game Preview and Pick- New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers

This clash is set to get underway at 12 p.m. (PT) and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.

Devils Overview

New Jersey has won four of its last five games but it is a case of too little too late after getting eliminated from the playoffs earlier this month. The only setback during this run was a 4-1 loss to the Rangers on April 21 as a 156 road underdog. The total ended as a PUSH but it has stayed UNDER in four of its last seven games.

The Devils continue to play well on defense with a goals-against-average of 2.0 in their last seven games which is even better than their season average of 2.5. The problem all season long has been an offensive attack that is ranked 27th in the NHL with a goals-per-game average of 2.3. They have also struggled on the power play with a conversion rate of 16.3 percent, which is also ranked in the bottom-third of the league.

Rangers Overview

It has been a battle all year long for a Rangers’ team that was one of the favorites to win the Eastern Conference this season, but Thursday night’s 4-3 victory over Carolina as 153 road favorites finally secured a spot in the playoffs. They are currently in a three-way tie with Ottawa and the New York Islanders with 54 points and, depending on the outcome this weekend’s games, will finish somewhere between sixth and eighth in the standings.

This obviously adds some importance to winning this contest as you would have to believe that New York would much rather face a team like Washington in the first round as opposed to Pittsburgh. The Rangers are another team that has struggled at times to find the back of the net this season with an average of 2.6 goals a game, but behind goalie Henrik Lundqvist, its defense remains one of the best in the league. Lundqvist comes in with a GAA of 2.10 and the team as a whole is ranked fourth in the NHL with a 2.3 GAA.

Devils vs. Rangers Betting Lines and Trends

New Jersey has been opened as a 110 road underdog on BetOnline’s money line with the Rangers listed as 110 home favorites. The total line for this contest has been set at 5.

The Devils are 7-19 in their last 26 road games and 3-10 in their last 13 games against a team with a winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six division games.

The Rangers are 5-0 in their last five home games and 5-2 in their last seven games against the division. The total has either gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in their last six home games.

Head-to-head in this matchup, New York has won two of the previous three meetings this season and the five-goal has ended as a PUSH in the last two games. Overall the home team in this series has a slight 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings.

Devils vs. Rangers Free NHL Pick

As much as New Jersey would love to end a very disappointing season on a high note with a win over its rivals, there is still too much on the line for the Rangers to take their foot off the gas in this game. It should be a great battle until the final buzzer, but the free NHL pick in this one is with New York.
