According to current NHL odds, the Oilers are a -135 money line favorite and the total is 5.5. These teams haven’t met since 1/11/2012 when the Devils squeaked out at 2-1 win on the road. Who will cash a winning ticket for your hockey picks tonight?

Oil Change Needed in Edmonton

The Oilers had high expectations heading into this season. With twelve former first round draft choices on their roster it’s about time this club comes into their own. The franchise hasn’t made the playoffs since 2006 when they advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals and lost to Carolina in 7-games. However, they have stumbled out of the gate losing their first 2-games of the season. They were thoroughly outplayed in a 6-2 loss at Vancouver on Saturday night. In their season opener they blew a 4-2 lead and lost at home to Winnipeg 5-4. Following tonight’s game the Oilers will host Montreal before embarking on a 6-game road trip to the East Coast. Getting at least 3-points minimum in the next 2-games is imperative or they could be staring at a dreadful October, and a huge uphill climb in the standings. Edmonton will receive a boost tonight with the return of center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who missed the first 2-games with a shoulder injury.

Jersey Boys

The Devils have also got off to a slow start to the season. They opened with a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh. Then on Friday in their home opener they lost 4-3 in overtime to the Islanders. The point was of little consolation to the Devils who really needed a win before setting out on a 5-game in 11-days road trip, that will all take place in 5 different Canadian cites starting with tonight. Head coach Peter DeBoer will go with Marty Brodeur in goal tonight, and then come back with Cory Schneider tomorrow night in Vancouver.

Final Analysis

The Oilers once again look like they are still seeking their identity despite all the offensive talent they can throw at you. It will take rookie head coach Dallas Eakins a bit of time to correct the chemistry issues. The Devils effort level was very good in their first 2-games. Brodeur will be solid tonight as always and provide a steadying influence for his club on the road. Based on what I have seen from both clubs, for my sports picks I have to go with a small lean on the team that’s shown the more consistent effort.
