The Winnipeg Jets host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday with faceoff scheduled for 8:05 PM ET. Let's check out the betting odds for this clash.

NHL Preview

According to current NHL Betting odds the Jets are a -140 home favorite and the total is 5.5. The Jets defeated the Devils in 2 of their 3 meetings a season ago. This will be the first of 2 meetings between these clubs this season with the other coming on November 25th in New Jersey.

Having a Devil of a Time

The Devils are winless through their first 5-games of the season. They’ve had a nightmare of a 3-game stretch. On Monday they held at 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd period in Edmonton and ended up losing the game 5-4 in a shootout. The next night in Vancouver they led 2-0 before squandering the lead and losing 3-2 in overtime. Friday night they had a pair of 1-goal leads at Calgary and allowed a late 3rd period goal in a 3-2 loss. Through 5-games Damien Brunner leads the Devils with 3 goals and 2 assists. The Devils goaltending tandem of Marty Brodeur and Cory Schneider was supposed to be a strength heading in the season but that hasn’t been the case early on. Both goalies have less than a .890 save percentage which is the equivalent of being below the Mendoza Line in baseball. One area that the Devils can help themselves is on the power play which has gone 1 for 10 so far this season. They will have a golden opportunity to do so versus a Winnipeg team that’s allowed 6 power play goals by opponents so far this season.

Jets in a Holding Pattern

After starting the season 2-0 the Jets have dropped 3 in a row. Tonight will be their 2nd game of a season high 6-game home stand. In the first of those games on Friday night Winnipeg was listless in a 4-1 loss to Dallas. The Stars scored 3 goals in a 7-minute stretch of the first period to take a 3-0 lead and Winnipeg was never able to recover. The Jets are led in scoring by a couple of defensemen. Both Tobias Enstrom and Dustin Byfuglien have 6 points with all of them coming on assists. Forward Bryan Little has played very well scoring 3 goals and an assist in the first 5 games. The Jets have done a decent job on the power play thus far going 5 for 24 with the man advantage.

Final Analysis

We have two struggling teams meeting tonight for our NHL picks. The Devils will be playing their 4th road game in the last 7 days. Their confidence is definitely low after blowing leads in their last 4 games all resulting in losses. I have to give Winnipeg a slight edge here with home ice being the deciding factor. History also supports the Jets in this situation as well. Since the start of the 1996-1997 year any money line favorite coming off 3 or more losses in a row, versus an opponent coming off 4 or more losses in a row, has gone 100-36 (73.5%). I rest my case.

Free Pick: Jets -140 over the Devils.
