Our resident NHL handicapping professional breaks down Monday’s game between Dallas and San Jose. Take the time to read this revealing betting preview article on this contest which culminates with a money line selection.

Stars and Sharks attempt to stave off Playoff Elimination
The San Jose Sharks will host the Dallas Stars on Monday at 10:35 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Bookmaker, San Jose is a -145 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. The Sharks have won both of their meetings versus the Stars this season by scores of 5-2 and 5-3. Each of those games was played in Dallas, and both easily went over the total. Dallas and San Jose remain mathematically alive in the Western Conference playoff chase. However, short of a minor miracle, the chances of either one of these clubs qualifying for the postseason is highly unlikely.

Reaching for the Stars
The Dallas Stars are on the cusp of playoff elimination, but you can’t fault them for not giving it their best shot over the past three weeks. Dallas has gone 11-5 in their last sixteen games, and that includes winning six of their previous seven on the road. As a matter of fact, Dallas has been one of the more profitable money line wagers on the road in the NHL this season. They’ve gone a very respectable 22-17 against the money line in away games during the 2014-2015 NHL campaign, and a $100 a game money line wager on Dallas in their away contests has earned a profit of $940.

High Scoring and Entertaining
The Dallas Stars won’t be accused of not being an entertaining team to watch this season, and especially so in recent games. Dallas has gone over the total in each of their previous four, and there was a combined average of 7.4 goals per game scored. The Stars have scored three goals or more in seven of the last eight games, and have allowed an average of 4.0 goals per contest in their previous seven. Kari Lehtonen will get the start in goal for Dallas tonight, and he’s gone a dismal 2-8 in his last ten with a lofty 3.42 GAA.

Shear Disappointment for Sharks
The San Jose Sharks will arguably be the most underachieving team in the NHL this season when it’s all said and done. The notion of them not making the playoffs prior to the start of the year would’ve have been considered absurd, and that would be putting it mildly. However, games aren’t played on paper, and the Sharks enter today on the brink of elimination from the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They’ve nobody to blame but themselves, and that point was exemplified in a must win game on Saturday versus the lowly Arizona Coyotes. The Sharks were a 5-3 road loser to an Arizona team which is destined to finish at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. San Jose has gone an unimpressive 19-20 against the money line at home this season. Hypothetically, if you made a $100 money line wager on the Sharks in each of their thirty-nine games on home ice, it would’ve resulted in a loss of $1540.

Final Analysis
There’s a ton of money line betting value on the road underdog in this game. As I alluded to earlier, Dallas has been one of the best bets on the road this season, and San Jose is one of the worst at home. I’m going to follow that line of thinking when making one of my NHL picks on Monday.
