The Detroit Red Wings will host the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena with faceoff set for 7:35 PM ET.

NHL Preview

According to current NHL betting odds Detroit is a -165 money line favorite and the posted total is 5.0. This will be the first of 2 meetings between these clubs this season with the other coming at Phoenix on October 19th.

Wings Receive a Reality Check

The Detroit Red Wings come off their first loss of the season after getting off to a 2-0 start to the season. The Bruins brought the new member of the Eastern Conference back down to earth in a 4-1 win at the TD Garden in Boston last Saturday night. On the positive side the Red Wings have had 4 full days of rest heading into tonight’s game, and by all rights should have fresh legs in addition to being mentally sharp. Henrik Zetterberg scored the lone goal in the loss at Boston. The Bruins outshot the Red Wings 37-26 for the game. Boston was able to convert on 2 of their 4 power play chances and dominated Detroit physically.

Coyote Ugly

Phoenix comes off a horrible performance as they were shellacked by the Islanders 6-1 in Uniondale, New York on Tuesday night. The loss dropped Phoenix to 1-2 on the season. Despite the lopsided score the Coyotes outshot the Islanders 34-28 for the game. However, they dug themselves a huge hole falling behind 3-0 midway through the 2nd period and things just snowballed from there. Martin Hanzal scored his 1st of the season for the lone goal of the night for Phoenix. If things are to rapidly improve for the Coyotes they must tighten up defensively, and receive better goaltending from Mike Smith. Smith was pulled after the 2nd period of the Islanders game after allowing 5 goals on just 20 shots.

Final Analysis

It would be extremely difficult to side with Phoenix on the road right now. They’ve been outscored 11-2 in their 2 road games this season, and dating back to last year they’re now a dismal 5-16 on the money line in the last 21 away games. As a matter of fact out of those last 16 road losses, 11 have been by 2 goals or more. The Red Wings just ran into a real hornet’s nest in Boston on Saturday. There’s a reason the Bruins have been in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. The Red Wings are rested, are the superior team in this matchup regardless of any other factor, and with 4 days rest versus a horrible road team, they’re the only logical play for our NHL picks. Because of the heavy juice I would advise just a conservative wager on Detroit as a money line wager.

Free Pick: Make a very conservative wager on Detroit -165 over Phoenix.
