There are two things you do with a streak, either respect it and watch it grow or break it. Tampa Bay will be looking to crack their winless run that is now up at five games, there was a sole singular solitary ray of light in the point that they picked up on Tuesday night keeping them within reach of first-place Carolina, but they’ll be expecting more against the Caps.
Streak x 2
They’ll also be hoping that this match is a double streak buster as Washington, despite the fact that the bottom of their division looking for their third straight win.
Enough with the streaking…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
I think a more significant stat in this game, irrespective of the streaks is the fact that the Lightning Bolt's have one of the best home records, at 5-1-1 compared the Washington Capitals who are 1-4-1 on the road this season.
So quoth the sportsbooks
Tampa Bay are the NHL odds favourites with this game at -150 while the Washington Capitals are at +125. If you search around and check out the SPR forum you may find NHL odds as high as +130 for the Caps.
Last time these games met back in January (at Tampa Bay) was a nine goal stunner in the Lightning's favour thanks in no small part to a brace from Eric Brewer and Martin St Louis. I don't think that we've seen nine goals in this clash (another 6-3 to the Lightning is at +3300, and a reverse in the Caps’ favour is at +4000) but I do think it's certainly worth betting on the game going over 5.5. It’s tight odds of -142. But if you think that’s Tommy-rot you can bet on under 5.5 at +120.
Your Humble NHL Handicapper is not tempted at all by the odds the game going Over 6.5 goals at just 100, and Under 6.5 goals at -154 fails to get any sort of reaction out of me either.
If you think to streaks will balance each other out and the game will end the drawn you can turn a tidy profit as the odds go as high as +300 on the game being tied, and if you feel lucky (punk) then why not add in Tampa Bay winning it in overtime to you NHL picks, which is offered up at +1600 by Ladbrokes.
As an aside you might like to know that Tampa Bay lightning of 12/1 to win the Eastern conference while the Tampa Bay Lightning are 13/10 to win the south-east. It's much too early days to be talking about Stanley Cup winners but I'm going to do it anyway Tampa Bay are 25/1 while Washington Capitals arte 50/1. I only mention that because I think it might have a bearing on who comes out on top in this match.
Prediction: Tampa Bay win 4-2 at +1600 with Ladbrokes.
