The Buffalo Sabres host the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. Which betting odds do we believe offer us the best chance of cashing in with our NHL picks tonight?

According to current NHL odds the Canucks are a -140 road favorite on the money line and the posted total is 5.0. Buffalo has won 4 of the last 5-games played between these 2 clubs. The last time these 2 teams met was on 3/3/2012 resulting in a 5-3 Buffalo road win. Should NHL bettors expect a similar result tonight, or are we smart to look elsewhere with our sports picks tonight.

Break Up the Sabres

The Sabres finally earned their first win of the season 4-3 in a shootout on the road versus the Islanders. The win stopped the bleeding temporarily after Buffalo opened the season with 7 consecutive losses. Ryan Miller was once again stellar in goal stopping 41 of 44 Islanders shots on goal. Miller also stopped 2 of 3 shootout attempts. Marcus Foligno scored his first of the season with just over 2-minutes to play in regulation to tie the score at 3-3. Thomas Vanek with his 3rd and Tyler Ennis with his 1st also scored for the Sabres. The 3 goals scored were the highest by the Sabres this season. Prior to that Buffalo had scored 1-goal or less in 6 of their first 7 games. This will be the Sabres 3rd game in the last 4 nights. Ryan Miller is once again scheduled to be in goal tonight. Despite his team’s poor start to the season Miller has been undaunted in posting a very good .939 save percentage in 5 starts.

Vancouver Road Rage

The Canucks have gone just 2-3 at home this season with 1 of those wins requiring overtime. The road has been kinder as they’ve gone 2-0 in that role in the early going. The Canucks began a 7-game road trip on Tuesday night by winning at Philadelphia 3-2. They trailed 2-1 entering the 3rd period until Chris Higgins tied it, and then Ryan Kessler scored the winner with just 2:25 to go in regulation. Henrik Sedin added 2-assists and now has a team leading 9-points through the first 7-games. Roberto Luongo is scheduled to start in goal tonight. The heavily scrutinized Luongo has started 6 of the first 7 games for Vancouver and posted a less than impressive 2.82 GAA and .899 save percentage. If he ever is going to get right it will be tonight versus a Buffalo team which has been anemic offensively.

Final Analysis

Dating back to last season the Canucks haven’t seen any of their last 7 road games go over the total. Similarly Buffalo hasn’t seen any of their previous 6 home games go over the total. With Ryan Miller in top form again, and his teammates inability to get on the score sheet this season, the contest has all the ear marks of a low scoring affair. Take the 'Under' with your NHL picks.
