Coyotes and Canucks collide in dispair to get back into the win column and the game poised delicately on the NHL odds board. Which side presents the value pick?

Arizona Coyotes
Arizona Coyotes are flush off a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, a road loss that has them slipping to an 11-19-2 mark on the away. Most concerning, though, is a recent dip in form that sees the Coyotes sporting a woeful 2-8-0 mark in their last ten games. Can the Coyotes transcend this poor run of form and upset the Canucks at home?

By the NHL odds, the Coyotes aren’t written off entirely. They are installed as the nominal road underdogs of +104 to +110 at most sports betting shops. A few have the Coyotes installed on even money though, which certainly underscores the notion that they do have a reasonable shot to take the win at Rogers Arena.

Overall, the Coyotes are 28-32-6 on the season, level with the Vancouver Canucks on 62 points and tied for fourth place in the Pacific Division. Playoff hopes are dimming fast – indeed they are absolute long shots to win the Stanley Cup at +100000 in NHL betting futures, the largest priced side currently trading – and it’s only a matter of time before they come off the board entirely.

Vancouver Canucks
Inasmuch as the Coyotes are sporting poor form of late, Vancouver Canucks hardly strike a better pose. Not only are the pair tied in the Pacific Division on 62 points and in fourth place, but also the Canucks are riding a poor run of form that has them boasting a subpar 3-7-0 record in their last ten games.

Most recently, the Canucks are coming off a loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Well, a loss is putting it mildly. It was a complete and utter beat down that had most Vancouver fans cringing in horror and, in all likelihood, prompted more than a few to switch the channel over to watch a more riveting game of curling.

The 5-1 loss came after a surprising 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, in which the Canucks defied the NHL odds. Unfortunately, they were unable to build on that result in Monday’s clash with the Kings. The loss marked their fourth defeat in the last five games.

In spite of this less than stellar form, the Canucks are matched as the home favorites on the NHL odds board, anywhere from -116 (at 5Dimes) to -130 (at BetCRIS). This market outlook is almost entirely a function of the quality (or lack thereof) of their opponents the Coyotes. Home advantage may have something to do with it as well, but with the Canucks sporting just a 14-12-7 mark at home this season and riding a three-game losing streak at home its impact is debatable.

NHL Betting Verdict
Both the Coyotes and the Canucks are wholly off form and off colour this season. Recent form is nothing to hang your hat where either side is concerned, which makes the handicapping of this game a tricky exercise. If there’s one thing that stands out it’s the fact that the Canucks look to be overpriced as the home favorites at several sportsbooks. With such abysmal form, how can the Canucks be trading as high as -130 to win outright? Beggars belief.

Then again, the Coyotes are a risky bet on the road too and a deceiving contender at even Odds with William Hill. For our NHL pick, it’s probably best to take the Vancouver Canucks but look for lower odds of -114, which can be found at Pinnacle, BetOnline and 5Dimes.
