The Edmonton Oilers can win because…
They’ve shown signs of life recently. After starting the year 4-15-2, the Oilers have been respectable with a 7-4-1 record over their last 12. They are still a flawed team but at least they are being competitive on a nightly basis.
The Canucks are a very streaky team and although they’re playing well right now, things can change on a dime for them. Right now they’re on a five-game winning streak but prior to that, they had dropped eight of 10. That included costly home losses on the NHL odds to teams like Dallas and Florida, so keep that in mind before you lay all of that juice.
The Vancouver Canucks can win because…
The Canucks are playing great these days. That means being smart defensively, limiting their opponents’ opportunities and doing just enough offensively to get by. The Canucks have allowed six goals in their last five games and have not allowed a power play goal in 15 straight shorthanded situations. This is what John Tortorella hockey is all about.
Roberto Luongo should be in net for this one and he’s got a pretty good track record against Edmonton. He’s 24-11-3 with a 2.37 GAA. Given how feeble Edmonton’s situation in net is these days, the goaltending advantage alone is enough to add the Canucks to your NHL picks.
Outlook & Pick
This is a tough spot for Edmonton. Not only are they facing a hot Canucks team right now, they have to face them in a back-to-back situation after losing to Boston on Thursday night. The Oilers also played on Tuesday, so that makes it their third game in four nights. I’m not going to lay the juice but I’ll add the Canucks on the puck line to my NHL picks.
