Enjoying the Road
This will be the Montreal Canadians final game of a 4-game road trip to the Western Provinces. Montreal started the trip with a 3-2 loss to Calgary but has rebounded with 2 straight wins over Edmonton and Vancouver by identical 4-1 scores. The Habs also enjoy the luxury of entering tonight with 2 full days of rest which is a rarity when in the middle of a road swing. A very encouraging sign for the Canadians was the play of Carey Price in Saturday’s win over the Canucks. Price was absolutely terrific in stopping 39 of 40 shots on goal. Lars Eller scored his team leading 5th goal of the season for Montreal and it came while the Canadians were shorthanded. Tomas Plekanec added a power play goal in the 3rd period to push the Canadians into a commanding 3-1 lead which they would never relinquish. In the 4-1 win over the Oilers last Thursday Brendan Gallagher had a goal and an assist, while Peter Budaj was solid in goal stopping 28 of 29 shots.
Back in Black
The Jets got off to a fast 2-0 start to the season then proceeded to drop 3 games in a row. The most disturbing part was the last 2 of those 3 losses came on the front end of a 6-game home stand. Claude Noel proceeded to rip his team in the press prior to Sunday night’s home game versus New Jersey and it served the Jets well. Winnipeg responded with a dominant 3-0 win to get things back in the positive column. Al Montoya was stellar in goal stopping all 24 shots in his first start of the season. Evander Kane led the way scoring all 3 goals while Michael Frolik added 2 assists.
When it comes to forming my sports picks, I’m anticipating a flat spot here for the Canadians. They’re already 2-1 on the 4-game trip, and have seemed to break the hex of not being able to win in the Western provinces that’s plagued the franchise in recent years. In addition Montreal is a dismal 3-15 versus the money line in the last 3 seasons on the road when playing just their 2nd game in 5 days. The Jets are coming off arguably their best effort of the young season and will be anxious to atone for their struggles versus Montreal in recent years.
Any NHL home team that’s facing an opponent coming off 2 straight road wins each by 2 goals or more, and has played 5 games or less over the last 14 days is 29-10 (74.4%) on the money line since the start of the 1996-1997 year.
Free Pick: Jets +100 over the Canadians.
