The Canadians take on the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary Alberta with the puck drop scheduled for 8:05 PM ET. Is there any edge to be found for your NHL picks in this Wednesday night battle?

According to current NHL odds, the Canadians are a -135 money line road favorite and the posted total is set at 5.5. Montreal hasn’t won at Calgary since 1/5/2002.

On the Road Again

This is the first of 3-games in 4-nights on the road for Montreal. After tonight they are off to Edmonton and then Vancouver. Cary Price will be in goal for the Canadians this evening. After opening their season with a loss at home versus Toronto the Canadians bounced back with an easy 4-1 win over Philadelphia. Center Lars Eller is off to a terrific start for the Habs. The 24-year old native of Denmark has 3-goals and 2-assists in the first 2-games of the season. Center Alex Galchenyuk has also contributed nicely with 4-assists thus far. Playing in Calgary isn’t the only western Canadian city in which the Canadians have struggled in recent years. The Canadians have seen their last 30-games in the Western Provinces result in a dismal 8-22 record versus the money line.

Ignite the Flames

There’s been a mixed reaction to the Flames start of the season, that’s seen them earn 4 of a possible 6 points in their first 3-games. It’s encouraging in the respect that this club was picked by many of the experts including myself to be a bottom feeder in the Western Conference. The negative side to the story is they blew a 3-goal lead to the Washington Capitals in their season opener that they ultimately lost in a shootout. Then on Sunday night they squandered a 3-1 third period lead and lost to Vancouver in another shootout. It’s evident that although this team has played better than expected in the early going, they still have some confidence issues to overcome. The Flames have exhibited balanced scoring through the first 3-games with 7 different players accounting for 3-points or more. Head coach Bob Hartley has disclosed that Joey McDonald will be in goal tonight.

Final Analysis

The good news is the Flames scored 12-goals in their first 3-games. The bad news is that they allowed 13. Montreal has managed to light the lamp 7-times in the first 2-games. Carey Price still has to prove to me that he can return to the form he once displayed before I stick my toes in the water. The Flames play an exciting style that unfortunately leaves them exposed in their own zone at times. I like this one to be an exciting game to watch and expect plenty of scoring opportunities. My lean is on a high scoring affair, and with the total posted at 5.5, I believe that the 'Over' is the way to look with your NHL picks.
