The Montreal Canadiens had been leading the Eastern Conference for most of the season but a recent slump has dropped them from first to fourth.

NHL Betting: Canadiens vs. Bruins Picks

They’ve lost three of four and another loss on Wednesday would allow the Boston Bruins to start building a buffer atop Northeast Division.

Record: 97-102 (+165)

The Montreal Canadiens can win because…

They’ve still played well during their slump. It’s not as if the Habs are getting blown out all over the place. Yes, they’ve lost three of four but each of the losses came by just one goal and they still won five straight before that.

The Habs have won five of six on the road and they’ve already won in Boston once this season (4-3 on March 3rd). The Bruins have lost three of five and are off their form these days. The Habs can take advantage and make a statement on Wednesday.

The Boston Bruins can win because…

They are tough to beat at home. They are 11-2-1 at home this season –in case you’re keeping track – which that ties them for the fewest home losses in the NHL.

Montreal is having some issues at the offensive end and a visit to Boston won’t help. The Bruins give up just 2.10 goals per game, which is the second-best average in the NHL. The Habs have scored just 10 goals in their last five games.

The Bruins have fared well versus their division this year, winning eight of 12 games. The Habs are just 5-8 against their neighbors during this shortened campaign.

Outlook & Pick

The Habs and Bruins always play slugfests and this game isn’t likely to be any different. People making their NHL picks on this game can expect a playoff-type atmosphere and another one-goal result. Nine of the last 10 meetings have been decided by exactly one goal.

It doesn’t make sense to lay these kinds of numbers with Boston when you consider that Montreal has won five of their last 11 visits (and 30 of their last 60) to Boston. These teams basically split all of their contests – as they have so far this season.

I’ll shoot for the under as the Habs haven’t scored much recently while the under is 7-0-1 in the Bruins last eight. That is the most likely way that we can profit against what the books have set for the NHL odds in this one.

Pick: Under 5 at Bwin
