The top two teams in the Northeast go to battle tonight when the Montreal Canadiens visit the TD Garden to take on the Boston Bruins in a matchup of two teams fighting for the top spot in the division.

NHL Pick: Canadiens vs. Bruins

One team holds value in this game; find out which direction we are heading into with our NHL picks

Most of the largest online sportsbooks have positioned the home team as -160 money favorites on the NHL odds boards, which is to be expected given the Bruins have taken 5 of the last 6 meetings.

The total has been set to 5 goals, with a take back of +110 on the under. Six of the last eight meetings between these adversaries have stayed below the posted total when the game takes place in Boston.

Montreal enters play tonight with the 5th ranked offense in the NHL, scoring an average of 3.1 goals per game. On defense they are equally as good, ranking 5th, surrendering an average of just 2.4 goal per contest.

The Canadiens have enjoyed recent success on the highway, winning five of their last six games played on the road. However, they are only 19-39 in their last 58 games played away from Bell Centre when facing a team with a stellar home winning percentage above the .600 mark. Montreal has eclipsed the total in seven of their last nine games played on the road.

The Bruins come into this matchup with an offense that is currently ranked 10th in the league, scoring an average of 2.9 goals per game. But, their stingy defense is the nucleolus of this team, which is ranked atop the NHL, allowing an average of just 2.1 goals per game.

Boston is a perfect 5-0 in their last five games played at TD Garden and 13-6 in their last 19 overall.  As expected, with such a superb defense, the Bruins have been involved in a lot of low scoring affairs as of late. In fact they are under in four straight at home and eight of eleven following a win.

The Pick

While the Bruins have been dominant on their home ice, the Canadiens have been an above average team on the road.

However, Montreal has struggled against Boston, but tonight that will all change, as I expect them to play at a high level and overtake the Bruins on their home ice.

These teams are too evenly matched not to jump on the underdog, which means all the value is on Montreal on this contest.

NHL Pick: Canadiens +140 at 5dimes
