The Boston Bruins have a cupcake matchup on Saturday when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes. Did the oddsmakers overlook things in what appears to be a blowout match?

With matchups against Ottawa, Buffalo and Pittsburgh next week, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they got caught looking ahead. Even so, this is a huge mismatch as far as the matchup on paper is concerned.

Record: 118-139 (-1443)

The Boston Bruins can win because…

This should be a gimme. Boston still has plenty to play for as they are trying to fend off Montreal for the third second seed in the Eastern Conference. On Saturday, they’ll face a team that’s arguably been the worst in the NHL in this season.

The Bruins have pummeled Carolina twice this season as they have outscored them 11-5 in two games. The Bruins are the best defensive team in the league, so if they are going to score five goals, they’ll win. This should be child’s play.

The Carolina Hurricanes can win because…

…can they? The Hurricanes have morphed into the worst team in the NHL. They enter Saturday on a seven-game losing streak but believe it or not, it’s their second in the last month. They’re not even coming close in their losses as they continue to get blown out left, right and center. The Canes have allowed at least three goals in 11 straight losses while being outscored 50-17 in the process.

If you’re adding Carolina to your NHL picks these days, you’re simply crazy.

Outlook & Pick

Not only are the Hurricanes bad, they are also one of the worst home teams in the NHL. They won just seven of their 20 home contests in front of their home audience.

The NHL odds on the Bruins moneyline is a bit too steep but I’ll take the Bruins puck line. Each of the Canes last 11 losses have been by more than a goal.
