The Philadelphia Flyers rank near the top of the power play and penalty kill ranks this season, yet they have been eliminated from playoff contention and appear to be in disarray. On Tuesday, they’ll have a chance to play spoiler against the Boston Bruins, who are trying to keep control fo the No. 2 seed in the East.

Record: 136-155 (-770)

The Boston Bruins can win because…

The Flyers have tapped out. The NHL odds makers don’t even give the Flyers any respect at home these days as they have lost two of their three at home. Boston is a pretty tough matchup for Philadelphia as the Flyers offense can’t seem to get much going against Boston but the Bruins offense does just enough against the shoddy Flyers goaltending.

Philadelphia has nothing to play for here and they’ve lacked energy and enthusiasm all season long. There’s no reason to expect the urgency to be on their side here.

The Philadelphia Flyers can win because…

Boston isn’t playing great these days. The Bruins are coming off a win but they had lost four straight before that. Overall, they’ve tapered off quite a bit since their stellar start. People making their NHL picks saw them start off 19-4-3 but they are just 8-8-2 since then. If you’re a betting man, that means they are below .500 over their last 18 games.

The Flyers have won three of four and are scoring once again. They’ve scored 16 goals in their last four games and should be able to find some holes in a Bruins defense that’s allowed 16 in their last six.

Outlook & Pick

This is a tricky game to handicap. On the surface, the Bruins are the better team on the year but that’s not the case recently. Both teams have won on their home ice this season, so taking a shot with the Flyers here makes sense.
