The St. Louis Blues were one of the best teams in the NHL last season and that was due to their one-two Vezina punch of Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak.

NHL Betting – Blues vs. Red Wings Picks

However, Halak is hurt and Elliott has completely flopped, turning one of the stingiest teams into one of the easiest to score on. We’ll see if they can overcome the NHL odds on Wednesday when they visit Detroit.

Record: 36-45 (-876)

The St. Louis Blues can win because…

They’ve already topped Detroit once this season. Although they’ve lost two subsequent times to the Red Wings since, they still know that if they play their best, they can take care of the Red Wings rather easily as they did in their 6-0 season-opening win.

Detroit is nothing special these days. They are still good but recent losses to Columbus and Calgary (at home) show that this is not the dominant Western Conference power they used to be. These teams are evenly matched.

The Detroit Red Wings can win because…

The Blues are falling apart. Without Halak and with Elliott being nothing short of a wreck, this should be an easy win for the Red Wings.

Detroit has won two straight against the Blues since losing the opener and Elliott has a 3.03 GAA in three career starts against the Red Wings. Elliott has allowed 25 goals in his last five outings. There’s no way you can trust him in this spot.

The Blues have lost five straight and they are a shadow of themselves right now. The Red Wings have won three straight and should make it a fourth on Wednesday.

Outlook & Pick

There’s just no way you can bet the Blues right now given how poorly they are playing. However, I’ll take the over as Elliott has been a wreck and the Blues know they have to score to get a win. With Halak out, the Blues contests have averaged 7.8 goals per game over their last seven, so we should see ample scores in this contest too.
