The St. Louis Blues make their way north of the border to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Friday with the opening faceoff coming at 8:05 PM ET.

NHL Preview

Friday 10/18/2013

St. Louis Blues (5-1) @ Winnipeg Jets (3-4)

According to current NHL betting odds the Blues are a -125 money line road favorite and the total is posted at 5.5. The road team has won 5 of the last 7-games between these 2 clubs.

Taking their Act on the Road

The Blues played their first road game of the season last night and it was a memorable one. After opening the season with 5 home games the Blues went into the United Center in Chicago and came away with a 3-2 shootout win on Thursday night. The Blues received goals from their two leading goal scorers Alexander Steen and David Backes who both scored their 5th of the year. Jaroslav Halak continued his strong play in goal this season stopping 27 of 29 shots on net. St. Louis has been dynamic offensively to start the season averaging 3.8 goals per game, and the power play is 2nd in the NHL converting on 30.4% of their man advantage opportunities. This will be the first time this season the Blues will be playing on consecutive nights. St. Louis is 35-16 in their last 51-games on the money line versus opponents with a losing record. The Blues have gone over the total in just 8 of their last 34 games dating back to last season.

The Jets Grounded

The Winnipeg Jets have lost 4 of their last 5 and it’s not difficult to pinpoint the foundation of their struggles. They’ve scored a grand total of 6-goals over those last 5-games. The Jets were shutout at home by Montreal 3-0 on Tuesday night. The Jets were stymied by the Canadians Carey Price who stopped all 36 Winnipeg shots on goal. It’s not a good sign when the two players tied for the team lead in scoring are defensemen and neither has scored a goal. Dustin Byfuglien and Tobias Enstrom lead the way for Winnipeg with 6-points each and all of those points have come on assists. The Jets have now gone under the total in 5 consecutive games headed into tonight.

Final Analysis

The Blues come off an emotional win last night on the road over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks in a game that was decided in a shootout. Although the Jets have struggled mightily of late, they’re in the middle of a 6-game home stand, and will enter tonight playing on 2-days of rest. In addition Brian Elliot is scheduled to make his first start in goal of the season for the Blues. My NHL picks lean is to go with the home underdog in this spot.
