The Red Wings host the Blackhawks on Wednesday at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan with the opening puck drop slated for 8:05 PM ET. The game will be televised by the NBC Sports Network.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings

According to NHL betting odds Chicago is a -145 money line road favorite and the posted total is 5.5. Chicago has won 11 of the last 14 meetings between these two clubs. These teams have seen just 6 of their last 30 meetings go over the total.

Offensive Juggernaut

The Chicago Blackhawks enter tonight as the top scoring team in the NHL averaging 3.5 goals per game, and are 2nd in the league averaging 33.5 shots on goal per contest. In addition their power play is 5th best converting on a stellar 22.4% of their man advantage opportunities. The Hawks have scored 4-goals or more in 22 of their 51-games (43.1%) this season. Putting that specific fact into perspective, there are currently 25 of 30-teams in the NHL averaging less than 3-goals per game. That’s the kind of plethora of offensive talent that this Chicago club possesses.

No Letting up for the Hawks

Chicago leads the Central Division by 4-points over the 2nd place St. Louis Blues, and is 2nd overall in the Western Conference 4-points behind the Anaheim Ducks. The Hawks just completed a 4-game home stand that saw them go 3-1, and earn 7 of 8-points possible. They’ve earned at least 1-point in 15 of the last 16, and 19 of their last 21-games.

Mediocrity Unacceptable in “Hockey Town USA”

The Detroit Red Wings fan base has been thoroughly spoiled with some very good team over the last couple of decades. However, this season’s addition seems to be stuck in mediocrity mode. Detroit has gone just 21-28 versus the money line this season. In their defense 10 of those 28 losses have come in overtime, which ranks as the 3rd most in the NHL. They enter tonight 5th in the Atlantic Division, and in a 3-way tie for 8th overall in the Eastern Conference. That’s certainly not horrible, but is surely not what the faithful have been accustomed too.

Nothing to get Excited About

Detroit has gone 6-7 in their last 13-games versus the money line, and failed to go over the total in any of their previous 6-games. They’ve scored just 1-goal or less in 3 of the last 4, and 4 of their last 6-games.This will be the 3rd of a 5-game home stand for the Red Wings. Detroit has gone a miserable 7-18 versus the money line at home this season.

Final Analysis

This is one of the few times that you will see me share the same opinion with the general public. The -145 on the money line is close to my border line cut off number, when it pertains to wagering on a favorite. The Hawks have been consistent all season, and much better than average on the road. The Red Wings aren’t a very confident bunch despite being a formidably talented team. In addition, the Red Wings home struggles have already been well documented. My lean here’s is on the defending champions as a road favorite for our NHL picks.
