Defenseless in Edmonton

There wasn’t much doubt entering this season that the Oilers had a plethora of skilled forwards. The biggest question marks was will they be able to clean up things up in their own zone, and can Devin Dubnyk prove himself to be a legitimate #1 goalie in the NHL? Early returns have indicated that those potential issues are far from being resolved. Entering tonight’s game Edmonton ranks 29th in the NHL allowing 5.0 goals per game. They’ve allowed 4 goals or more in each of their first 5 games. They come off a disheartening 6-5 overtime loss at Toronto on Saturday night. In that loss the Oilers allowed the Leafs to tie the game with just 0:31 to go, and then win it in overtime on a goal by Dave Bolland. Mark Arcobello had a strong game for the Oilers with 3 assists and currently leads the team in scoring with 5 points.

What wrong with the Capitals?

This isn’t the start that head coach Adam Oates envisioned for his club entering the season. Their only win came in a stirring 5-4 overtime comeback at home versus Calgary. Since then the Caps have dropped 3 in a row including with the last 2 coming at home. Saturday night they were a 5-1 loser to a Colorado despite outshooting the Avalanche 41-28 in the game. When looking inside the numbers a couple of things stand out. The Caps are 28th in the NHL allowing 4.0 goals per game. The other thing is that their 5th in the NHL averaging 34.0 shots on goal per game but just 20th at 2.4 goals per game scored. When you calculate that all together it’s not a winning recipe. The encouraging thing is they’re creating plenty of offensive chances and eventually with their talent  the puck will start finding the back of the net.

Final Analysis

Both of these teams have plenty of offensive firepower, and the fact that both give up plenty of goals could be the most important stat for our sports picks. Creating scoring chances hasn’t been an issue for either of these teams so far this season. However, goaltending and play in their defensive zone hasn’t been high on neither team’s priority list. When it comes to placing our NHL picks, we believe that this one has all the ear marks of a very high scoring and entertaining game.
