NY Islanders (26-16-6)
The New York Islanders are coming off a win over Minnesota Wild on Tuesday to improve to 26-16-6 on the season, which includes a 16-8-3 mark at home and a 10-8-3 mark on the road. They’ll be looking to make it two in a row when they take on the Washington Capitals, but the NHL odds are stacked against them in NHL betting markets. Can they mastermind the upset on the road?

On the heels of their record, they are sat third in the Metropolitan division and fifth in the Eastern Conference. Tonight they face a stern test in Washington Capitals, who are top of the table across the board behind an impressive 35-9-4 record and 74 points. Predictably, the Islanders are matched as the road underdogs, anywhere from +135 (bet365 and Bookmaker) to +140 (5Dimes) to win straight up.

The Islanders defeated the Wild 5-3 on Tuesday at home, a result that saw them bounce back from a 4-2 home loss to the Red Wings and improve to 5-4-1 in their last ten games. They’ve won five of their last ten away games, including their last trip out to Ottawa 5-2. Earlier this season, the Islanders lost to the Capitals 4-1 at home.

Washington Capitals (35-9-4)
The Washington Capitals have suffered a mild dip in form of late, losing back-to-back games and slipping to 7-2-1 in their last ten games. They remain the standard in the Eastern Conference behind their impressive 35-9-4 record – a good nine points ahead of their nearest threat Florida Panthers. As such, they are trading as the firm faves to bounce back tonight, an NHL pick that can be backed at a best price of -148 at Heritage.

The Capitals’ standout season is underscored by solid form both home and away – they are 18-4-2 at home and 17-5-2 on the road. They did drop the last two games – a narrow 4-3 loss to Philadelphia in overtime and a 5-2 loss to the Panthers at home, but that could be down the lack of play in the week prior when games were postponed due to the bad weather. Some allowances for the unforeseen setback must be made.

That and the fact that the Capitals sat out Ovechkin in the last game due to his absence from the All Star Game – a game suspension handed down by the NHL to not only Ovechkin (injury) but also Johnathan Toews (illness) of the Blackhawks for skipping the blessed star-studded event. It’s likely Ovechkin will play tonight, but it remains to be seen whether he’s 100% fit.

Betting Verdict
Despite the lopsided outcome of the first meeting between these two Metropolitan rivals, NHL betting fans are expecting a closer game tonight. Form is positive on both sides of the coin and each team has plenty offensive weapons that can light up the scoreboard. The Capitals have a two-point cushion in the league standings over the Chicago Blackhawks and they’ll be looking to maintain that edge tonight. Beating the Capitals at Verizon is no mean feat – so few have accomplished it. Take the Capitals to win a close one at home on your NHL picks.
