The Washington Capitals come in off a very hard fought 3-2 win at Montreal, while the Winnipeg Jets come in off a 6-1 rout of the Maple Leafs, who will be our NHL pick here?

Caps Win Streak at Six with Win Over the Habs
Montreal has been the best team in the East for much of the year and they still hold the point lead in the conference, but look out as here come the Caps, who were picked by many to represent the East in the Stanley Cup Finals. Washington is now just four points behind the Canadiens in the East following their 3-2 win over Montreal on Thursday night. The game was tight throughout and it was a goal by T.J. Oshie with 11 and change left in the game that gave Washington their 6th win in a row. For Oshie it was his 8th goal of the year.

Getting the win in the game was Braden Holtby, whose phenomenal season continues. Holtby is now 16-4 on the year with a mighty fine 1.96 GAA. He should get the start here as well and is 8-3 with a 2.25 GAA vs the Jets in his career. Washington has been a very strong team at both ends of the ice this year as they come in ranked 4th in scoring (3.2 gpg) and 3rd in power play conversions (25.7%), while on defense they come in at 5th in goals allowed (2.2 gpg) and 6th in penalty kill (84.1%). This team will be tough to beat the rest of the way.

Stafford Nets Two as Jets Rout Leafs

On Wednesday night the Toronto Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead just 2:02 into the game, but after that it was all Winnipeg in he 6-1 win. The hero in the game was Drew Stafford, who scored both of his goals in the first period to put the Jets up for good in the game. They were his 8th and 9th goals of the year. Also having solid games were Mark Scheifele, who scored a goal and had an assist and Mathieu Perreault, who had two assists in the win. The six goals scored were the most in a game for the Jets since their 6-2 opening night win over Boston.

Standing tall in goal was Connor Hellebuyck, who was making just his 2nd career start. The first one came five days ago and he won that on by a 3-1 score over Minnesota. Getting the nod in this game should be Michael Hutchinson, who is 5-7 with a 3.09 GA on the year and is 0-1 with a 5.20 GAA vs the Caps in his career. Winnipeg has been a solid offensive team that ranks 8th in the league in scoring (2.8 gpg), but they are just 26th in power play conversions (15.9%). On defense is where they have really struggled, ranking 29th in goals allowed (3.1 gpg) and 21st in penalty kill (79.0%).

Washington is:

7-2 in their last nine vs. the Western Conference.

38-15 in their last 53 games playing on one days rest

Winnipeg is:

1-9 in their last 10 home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage of greater than .600

1-5 in their last 6 after allowing two goals or less in their previous game

I can’t go against the Caps on my NHL picks. They are just playing too well right now and Braden Holtby has been on fire as well. THe Jets will likely throw Hutchinson in goal and he has struggled this year. The Caps have the much better offense, the much better defense and all the momentum in the world right now. This is the team to beat in the East and they will push their win streak to seven games with a big win in Winnipeg tonight.
