The Pittsburgh Penguins have been virtually untouchable since the end of November. They’ve won 19 of their last 24 games. However, they’ve had some head-scratching, costly defeats recently that may make bettors think twice about backing them.

The Montreal Canadiens can win because…

The Penguins are coming off a home loss to the Florida Panthers. As a matter of fact, Pittsburgh is just 2-2 in their last four games with losses to the Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers. In case you’re wondering how much that would have cost you had you backed Pittsburgh on the NHL odds in those two games, you would have lost -275 against Florida and -190 against Edmonton.

The Pens are having a real hard time with defense these days as they’ve allowed four or more goals in four of their last seven games. As a matter of fact, only four other teams are giving up more than them this month. That’s why the Habs will have a shot to cash for your sports picks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins can win because…

They dominate this series at home. They’ve won four straight home meetings with the Habs and eight of the last 10. This is not a road trip that Montreal enjoys making.

The Pens were embarrassed at home in their latest game and you can rest assured they’ll bounce back. They haven’t lost back-to-back games since November 25th. The Pens are 9-3 after allowing four or more in their previous game, 4-1 following a loss of two goals or more and are 15-3 when online sportsbooks give them a total of 5.5 at home.

As for Montreal, they’re struggling these days. They are just 8-8-2 in their last 18.

Outlook & Pick

The Pens are coming off one of their ugliest defeats and sloppiest defensive efforts. That’s means they’ll fix things for Wednesday’s game. -175 is too much to lay with your NHL picks – especially since Pittsburgh has produce some costly losses recently, but I do think they win. However, I’ll take the under instead. The under is 10-2 when the Habs are on the road facing a total of 5.5 and the under has cashed in two of the last three meetings in Pittsburgh.

Pick: Under 5.5 at 5Dimes
