Our NHL handicapping professional analyzes the game between Chicago & Philadelphia. Go inside to read this informative article that’s concluded with an NHL pick on the total.

Blackhawks and Flyers on Wednesday
The Flyers and Blackhawks will meet on Wednesday in the first of two meetings between these clubs this season. Faceoff time at the First Union Center in Philadelphia is slated for 8:05 PM ET, and it will be aired by the NBC Sports Network. Current NHL odds at 5Dimes indicate that Chicago is a -138 money line favorite, and the total is at 5.5. These teams split their two encounters a season ago with the home team winning on both occasions, and each game stayed under the total.

The Goaltenders
Barring something unforeseen, Cory Crawford will make his fourth consecutive start tonight for Chicago. Crawford has been sharp in his previous two starts, going 2-0 with an excellent .953 save percentage. On a negative note, Crawford is 0-2 in his career against Philadelphia with a lofty 3.53 GAA, and below average .894 save percentage.

Philadelphia’s Steve Mason was awful in his first two starts of the season, posting a mammoth 6.09 GAA, and horrible .825 save percentage. He was relieved in the 7-1 loss at Florida (10/10) by backup Michael Neuvirth after allowing 4 goals on just 8 shots in the first 6:46 of the game. Neuvirth received the start in their home opener on Sunday (10/12) against Florida, and stopped all 31 shots in a 1-0 Flyers win. There’s been no confirmation at the time of this writing as to who the Flyers plan on starting in goal tonight. However, with Mason’s poor performances in his first two starts, and with him being absent for the last two days tending to family issues, I would say it’s a safe bet that we’ll see Neuvirth between the pipes.

Final Analysis
Philadelphia has managed just 4 goals scored in the first three games. The Blackhawks really tightened things up defensively during their last two games, and Cory Crawford seemed to display midseason form in those contests. Chicago has gone 27-8 (77.1%) under the total during the past two seasons in non-conference away games. I’m going to have a small lean toward a low scoring game for one of my NHL picks.
