The Boston Bruins are off to a terrible start to the 2015-16 NHL season. It won’t get any easier for them when they travel out west this week. Will the Bruins be our NHL pick for today?

Colorado allowed a three-goal third-period lead to slip away in their 5-4 loss to Minnesota in their opener, which was disappointing for those that had them with their NHL picks. However, they bounced back with an impressive win over Dallas and have to be feeling confident knowing that they could very well be 2-0 right now. The line of Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan Mackinnon and Alex Tanguay has clicked early on with a combined 12 points in two games and will continue to lead the way up front against a Boston team that has allowed a combined 16 goals in three straight losses to begin the season.

The Bruins will hope that they can get something going on the road following a rough start at home but they won’t have the luxury of matching lines and that could be an issue after they really struggled at five-on-five over the first three games.

Projected Starting Goalies
Boston will likely turn back to Tuukka Rask with the hope that he can perform better than he has in their first three losses as he is 0-3-0 with a 4.72 GAA and .846 save percentage.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche are expected to start Semyon Varlamov, who is 1-1-0 with a 4.05 GAA and .873 save percentage. Neither Varlamov nor Rask has been very good to open the year but they both have the potential to bounce back in this game with expectations higher for Varlamov since Colorado has more offensive firepower up front.

What’s The Pick?
The Bruins are in an interesting situation coming off an offseason in which they attempted to reload rather than completely rebuild and now seem to be somewhat stuck in the middle. The lack of cap space and the fact that their captain Zdeno Chara has yet to see the ice are two of the biggest reasons for Boston’s struggles and considering how they have looked early on there is a chance that things get worse before they get better.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche could very well be 2-0-0 right now. They managed to bounce back with an impressive 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars following a brutal collapse in their season opening loss to the Minnesota Wild and they will be playing with a sense of urgency as they wrap up a three-game home stand to open the year on Wednesday night.

They now appear poised to climb above .500 with a win at home in this game. Colorado has plenty of talent at all three levels and as long as the offense continues to click it will take the pressure off of Varlamov and allow him to find his game as one of the league’s better young goaltenders. Rask might not have that same luxury for the Bruins and we certainly expect the Avalanche to come out on top in a high scoring game on Wednesday night. They’re a sizable favorite on the NHL odds but take them here in this spot.
