The early game of the day featured the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils. The Rangers were trading in the -160 area as favorites for the game, which began at 3:00 PM EST.

Evening NHL Odds Update

It's all on the line tonight. What are the best NHL picks for tonight's busy schedule?

David Schwab had broken down that game for the public and his pick was on a 3-2 win for the Rangers. He decides against backing New Jersey despite the fact they'll have wanted to end their disappointing season with a positive performance.

Red Wings/Stars

In what should be a highly competitive game, Detroit will try to wrap up a playoff spot with a road win over Dallas.

When we last looked over the NHL odds, we saw the Stars favored in the +120 to +125 range, leaving the Red Wings as -135 favorites.

Dallas has not closed out the season well, losing four straight games ahead of tonight. Will they be able to end the season on a high note?

Well, David Lawrence thinks the value lies with the Red Wings here, given that they have much more to play for and are playing the far better hockey at the moment. They've also dominated the head-to-head series with the Stars recently, so in the end he's backing a Detroit win.

Total Time

In his picks of the day article, Lawrence has selected three total plays, the first of which comes in Chicago's visit of St. Louis.

The Blues are vying for home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs, so you know they'll be coming out with a lot of energy. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks have had the number one seed locked down for a while now, so they have the luxury of resting some important pieces should they see the need to.

That's why Lawrence is going with the UNDER 5 goals for his first play. He loves what St. Louis' goaltending and defense has been doing lately and hopes that leads to a low-scoring outcome.

Next up is another UNDER, this time in the Oilers/Canucks matchup in Edmonton. The Canucks are small road favorites there, but Lawrence believes the Oilers' offense will revert back to their horrible form, leading to a cashed ticket for the UNDER.

Finally, our resident NHL capper is on the OVER 5 for the Columbus/Nashville game. This is a crucial one for the Blue Jackets, with the Predators hoping to spoil the party as +210 underdogs. Defense has been lacking for the Preds this season and should be playing loose here with nothing to lose.
