Our NHL handicapper breaks down the game between Tampa Bay Lightning & Detroit Redwings on Saturday afternoon. He uncovers the best betting value, sharing a money line selection.

NHL Matinee Affair at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit
Two Atlantic Division rivals square off when Detroit hosts Tampa Bay on Saturday at 2:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at Bookmaker, Detroit is a -125 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. Tampa Bay has gone a perfect 3-0 versus Detroit this season, and two of the three contests went over the total. As a matter of fact, since the start of the 2013-2014 NHL campaign, Tampa Bay has taken seven of the eight encounters between these clubs.

Vying for the Top Seed in the East
The Tampa Bay Lightning are currently one point behind the Montreal Canadiens for the Atlantic Division lead, and trail the New York Rangers by two points for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning is coming off a 3-2 home loss to the Nashville Predators on Thursday. That defeat snapped a four game winning streak. Tampa Bay has gone a superb 30-9 against the money line at home this season, but is a less than impressive 16-20 on the road. The Lightning averages 3.3 goals per game, and that ranks best in the NHL. Tampa Bay has also gone an extremely profitable 18-6 against the money line this season versus Atlantic Division opponents.

Reeling Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are currently third in the Atlantic Division, and they’re not in any imminent damage of missing the playoffs barring a monumental collapse. However, they’ve not been very good in recent games. Detroit has gone 3-8 in their last eleven against the money line, and allowed a lofty average of 3.7 goals per contest. The Red Wings will go with backup Peter Mrazek in goal tonight. Detroit’s top goalie Jimmy Howard turned in terrible performances in each of their previous two games, and will be given a rest today. The Red Wings have gone a dismal 9-17 against the money line this season when facing Atlantic Division opponents.

Final Analysis
This is too much value being afforded on the road underdog with all things being considered. I simply can’t ignore that conclusion when making one of my NHL picks for Saturday.
