There are just three NHL games on the board tonight, and we’ve honed in on one of those. We invite you to read our NHL betting preview article on the game between the Penguins/Rangers which includes a free pick on the total, and a profitable betting system.
Metropolitan Division Clash in the “Big Apple”
The Rangers will host the Penguins tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York with the opening face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds posted at SBR, the Rangers are a -115 money line favorite and the posted total is 5.5. These teams have split their two meetings this season with each winning on home ice. Both of those contests stayed under the total.

The Probable Starters in Goal
The Penguins slated starter Marc-Andre Fleury has had a sensational start to the season. He’s gone 15-5 in 20-starts while posting a superb .928 save percentage. He’s been especially good on the road by going 6-1 in his 7-starts while compiling an excellent .935 save percentage. Fleury has already posted 4-shutouts to start the year.
Henrik Lundquist will be back in goal tonight after being give a rare night off in the Rangers 3-2 loss at Detroit on Saturday. Based on his subpar .882 save percentage over his last 4-starts, it was much needed rest. After all, Lundquist has started 19 of the Rangers 25-games this season. He’s performed very well in 6-starts this season versus opponents within the Metropolitan Division, going 4-2 with a stellar .923 save percentage. Lundquist has managed to post 3-shutouts already in the 2014-2015 campaign.
Explosive Offensive Team but Recent Low Scoring Results
The Penguins enter tonight as one of the top scoring teams in the NHL, averaging a robust 3.3 goals per game during their first 26-contests. However, they’ve gone under the total in each of their previous 4-games, and have gone over the total in just 3 of their last 11. They’ve been in a bit of an offensive funk in their last 5-games, scoring just 9-goals combined during that time.
Rangers out of Character to start the Season
The defending Eastern Conference champion New York Rangers hasn’t followed the script from a season ago. They’re off to a very disappointing 11-14 money line start on the year, and they’ve allowed 2.9 goals per game, and that’s been totally out of character compared to what we witnessed a season ago. They’ve seen just 10 of their first 25-games this season stay under the total, and that’s an unusually low ratio by the standards they set during the 2013-2014 campaign. The good news is, “the Blue Shirts” have shutout opponents 3-times in their previous 11-games.
NHL Totals Betting System
The last time these teams met was on 11/15/2014 and The Rangers lost 3-2 at Pittsburgh as a +140 money line underdog. The Rangers have a money line winning percentage of .440 this season, and the Penguins enter tonight having gone a stellar 18-8 against the money line to start the year. When combining those 3 occurrences it produces a fairly profitable NHL totals betting system. I’m going to use that sports handicapping tool in order to make one of my NHL picks for today.
Any team which is playing with same season revenge stemming from a money line underdog loss, and they have a winning percentage of .400 to .490, versus an opponent with a winning record, has seen 86 of those 138-games (62.3%) go under the total since 1996.
