There are just three games on the NHL card on Wednesday with the playoff positioning on the line. Five of the six teams in action need the points to keep pace. Here’s our NHL picks for the night.

Boston Bruins vs. New York Rangers
The Boston Bruins are playing their best hockey of the season right with eight wins in their last 10 games. They’ve been pretty effective on the road too, going 4-0-1 in their last five away games. On Wednesday, they’ll try to keep it moving when they visit the New York Rangers, a team they’ve dominated in recent meetings. They have won six of their last eight battles with the Rangers and their only two losses to New York came in extra time. They’ve also won three of their last four at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers had been one of the league’s hottest teams but they’ve cooled off. They’ve won just two of their last four and are 5-4 in their last nine games. That being the case, take a shot with the Bruins as a road dog. They should be in this one and have a reasonable chance to win.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton has shown a bit of a pulse lately, winning four of their last six games. That’s quite impressive for their standards when you consider that they only had 10 wins in their first 45 games. The issue is that it’s still hard to have faith in this team because each of their wins have been by one goal – three of which were via shootout. And the opponents aren’t that impressive as three of them came against slumping teams (Florida, Washington and Buffalo). The last was against a Sharks team that is quite mediocre.

While that might lead you to bet the Pens, you might want to be careful here. Pittsburgh has dropped six of eight and has just six wins in their last 18 contests. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury continues to regress as he’s allowed 27 goals in his last seven outings.

It’s a lot of juice to lay here with the Pens and the Oilers might be able to pull this one out. That being the case, go with the over in this spot as it looks like the best play.

San Jose Sharks vs. Calgary Flames
The Sharks are fresh off a disappointing loss to the lowly Edmonton Oilers and they’ll try to pick up the pieces on the road against the other team from Alberta. Although the Sharks are pretty happy with their recent seven-game homestand where they picked up points in six of the seven games, it doesn’t do a whole lot for bettors as they won just four of those contests. And losing to Edmonton as a massive home favorite makes that whole homestand unprofitable.

This will be a tight game but the Flames are hot right now having won seven of their last nine games. You get them as a home dog and they’ve actually been the better team of late. Goaltender Jonas Hiller has been effective, posting a 1.58 GAA in his last five, so take the Flames with your NHL picks in this spot.
