They’re called ‘Sharp’ bettors for some reason, probably a label given because they move the betting odds with the amount of their wagers, but sometimes they get too cute with their bets; today’s match-up provides us with yet another example of that.

The news came out that Joel Quenneville is desperate for some offensive production so he decides to put Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews back on the same line in hopes of giving his team an offensive spark but big money continues to pour in on the ‘under’ because typically ‘sharp’ bettors are contrarian players who like to go the opposite of what makes sense no matter what. Truth is, that is usually the way to go but in some cases, you simply have to watch and understand the psychology of the National Hockey League.

Normally I would say run the other way when there are line-up changes but not today because of the players involved.

This is Kane and Toews’ 11th season and tonight’s linemate Patrick Sharp has been around for parts of 16 seasons. This is not a group that will be confused or needs time to jell. In fact, now that this line is a reality perhaps the ‘hawks will start to cash in on some of their plethora of chances. Chicago is only 18th in scoring but has had many opportunities to score but just can’t seem to find that extra gear that makes all the difference in the result. With veterans who receive new linemates, it usually sparks inspiration which is why I’m betting the ‘over’. If this were three guys, with little experience in the league or with each other, then I would agree with the ‘under’ but this move doesn’t come close to qualifying.

The second tier of this move is one last effort to get Sharp going after producing just 2 goals and a -6 in 15 games. If this change doesn’t work I anticipate major line shake-ups in Chicago. This is a group that knows they must perform well which gives me the comfort knowing my money is going to get Chicago’s best effort.

On the other side, you can anticipate the opponents best any time the Blackhawks come to town. If I’m a franchise who hasn’t been in the Cup final in 13 seasons and the Blackhawks are coming to town with their three Stanley Cup trophies since 2010 there is no way I’m letting Chicago get out of my building with a win unless I give them a fight. Just watching Chicago come into my barn would inspire me to play as well as I could. Make no mistake that’s different than the Coyotes coming in for a weekday visit. This will be a hard-fought, high-intensity battle, and one that is easily going over the total.
