Tuesday was a rough night and our first losing one on the season. The board was swept the wrong way as a pair of late goals in Washington and Minnesota ruined a couple of wins.

NHL Betting: Wednesday Picks

Now we move on to Wednesday to see if we can try and find some profit. Here’s a look at the NHL odds from two of the four contests on Wednesday.

Record: 9-11 (-200)

Boston Bruins at New York Rangers

The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers squared off in their regular season opener and the Bruins took that match. Now the two teams reunite as both appear to be trending in opposite directions.

After beating the Rangers, the Bruins won their second game of the season in a shootout over Winnipeg. Meanwhile, the Rangers lost their second straight in a 6-3 defeat at home to Pittsburgh.

The Bruins have looked like they are in midseason form so far as they have really played quite sharp. Meanwhile, the Rangers are about one or two losses away from hitting the panic button.

The Rangers have played two tough games so far, starting with the Bruins and then playing the Penguins the following night. They’ve since had a couple of days to regroup and should be much crisper on Wednesday night. Head coach John Tortorella has been shifting around personnel in hopes of getting a little bit more offense and that should come on Wednesday.

This game is really a coin flip but given the urgency for New York and given that I don’t have to lay so much with them, I’ll put them down as the free pick in this game. With a couple of days off, they should be fresh and focused on Wednesday night.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Phoenix Coyotes

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been one of the early-season surprises so far as they are 1-0-1 with three points. Few people figured they’d skate into Nashville on opening night and leave with a win but they did, and then they followed that up with a shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings. It’s hard to say if this is going to be a trend considering how bad the Blue Jackets should be but at this point, they are getting solid goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky and  they are competing each and every night.

The same can’t be said for the Phoenix Coyotes. They’re supposed to be a defensive-minded team but goaltender Mike Smith, who put the team on his back in the postseason last year, has given up 10 goals in two games so far.

The Blue Jackets actually play well in this series as they won three of four meetings last year. Those three wins matched the most against any one team for the Blue Jackets last season.

The Coyotes are favored by -150 and there’s simply no way I’m laying that kind of juice with them in this spot. There’s a good chance they win, as they’ve won six of eight home meetings with the Blue Jackets but Columbus is playing better hockey right now and deserves this NHL pick, since they’re paying +130.
