A couple of charter members of the NHL go at it tonight when the Rangers and Red Wings clash. If you’re looking for a solid reason to wager on the total in this game, we have more than enough ammunition to give you in this NHL betting preview article.

A Battle between “Original Six” Members
The Red Wings host the Rangers tonight at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with the opening face-off slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at BetOnline, the Red Wings are a -140 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. The Rangers won the only meeting between these teams this season by a score of 4-3 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Rangers also won all 3-games versus the Red Wings a season ago, and shutout the Red Wings in 2 of those 3-contests.

Probable Starting Goaltenders
The Rangers are indicating that #1 goaltender Henrik Lundquist will be rested tonight, and they will go with backup Cameron Talbot. The Rangers #2 goaltender has filled in admirably when called upon this season by compiling a .924 save percentage in 5-starts, and also turned in one shutout performance.

The Red Wings will in all likelihood go with their #1 goaltender Jimmy Howard. The veteran goalie has gone 12-9 in 21-starts this season, and has a solid .916 save percentage.

Rangers Lighting the Lamp
The New York Rangers have averaged 3.8 goals per outing during their previous 5-games. They’ve scored 3-goals or more in each of those 5-contests. During that same time span their power play has converted on a very good 21.1% of their chances. Their penalty killing in that same time frame has been a bit shaky, allowing opponents to cash in on 23.5% of its man advantage opportunities.

Red Wings over the Number has been Profitable
The Detroit Red Wings enter tonight having gone over the total in their last 6-games. As a matter of fact, the Wings have stayed under the total in just 1 of the last 14, and 2 of their last 20-games. Detroit has scored 5-goals or more in 4 of their last 5, and is averaging 4.5 goals per contest during their last 6. On a negative note, Detroit is also allowing a rather high 3.1 goals per contest during their last 8-outings. The power play has converted on a sizzling hot 38.9% of their chances over the last 5-games. Unfortunately their penalty killing during that 5-game period has been the polar opposite, allowing opponents to cash in on 66.7% of its man advantage opportunities.

Final Analysis
With all things being considered, this has all the ear marks of a high scoring game. The total of 5.0 seems to be based on both teams defensive minded past reputation rather than what the past few weeks of results have indicated. I’m going to be using the total in this game as one of my NHL picks for today.
