Did you know the backup goaltenders are slated to start tonight in the Blues and Blackhawks game? Read our NHL betting preview on this game which includes an applicable money line angle that’s won 75% of the time since 1996.

Central Division Showdown in the Windy City
Two of the better teams in the Western Conference have at it tonight when the Blackhawks host the Blues at the United Center in Chicago. The opening puck drop is slated for 8:05 PM ET, and the game will be televised nationally in the United States by the NBC Sports Network. According to the NHL betting odds at SBR, Chicago is a -140 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. St. Louis was a 3-2 home winner in the only meeting between these teams this season. The Blackhawks have won 5-games in a row at home versus the Blues.

Backup Goaltenders are Probable Starters
The listed probable starting goaltenders for tonight’s game are Jake Allen of the St. Louis Blues, and Antti Raanta of the Chicago Blackhawks. Allen entered the season as a very highly touted rookie, and he’s certainly lived up to his billing when given the opportunity. He’s gone 8-2 in 10-starts this season with a solid .918 save percentage, and that also includes 4-1 on the road with a terrific .940 save percentage. Allen is certainly going to be asked to carry a heavier load with Brian Elliot sidelined by a knee injury. The Blues signed veteran future Hall of Fame goaltender Martin Brodeur as an insurance policy this week. It remains to be seen when Brodeur will be fully ready for game action since he’s been inactive this season. This will be just the 4th start of the season for Chicago’s Antti Raanta. Although he’s gone only 1-2 in his first 3, he’s compiled a stellar .933 save percentage when called upon.

Both Teams playing Exceptional
The Chicago Blackhawks enter tonight’s game having won the last 3, 6 of the last 7, and 8 of their last 10-games. They haven’t gone over the total in any of their previous 4-games, and have surpassed the number just 6 times in 24-games this season.

The St. Louis Blues enter tonight having won the last 2, 4 of the last 5, and 7 of their last 10-games. They’ve also gone a very good 7-4 against the money line on the road this season. The Blues have gone under the total in 11 of 12-games during the past 2-seasons after winning each of their previous 2-games. St. Louis has gone over the total in just 2 of their last 8-games.

NHL Money Line Betting System
Chicago is coming off wins by identical 4-1 scores in their previous 2-games over the Ducks and Kings. I’ve alluded to earlier that the Blues had won their previous 2-games, but failed to mention both of those victories came in overtime. This sets up a rare and highly successful betting angle, and I’ll fully take advantage of it when making one of my NHL picks for today.

Any team (Chicago) coming off 2 straight wins by 2-goals or more, versus an opponent coming off 2 straight wins in overtime, has gone 21-7 (75%) against the money line since 1996.
