Last season, the Dallas Stars were the top scoring team in the NHL at 3.23 goals and they over overcame the defensive deficiencies, this season the same players are doing not playing as expected.

The Stars 18th ranked defense finally caught up with them in Stanley Cup Western semi-finals when they were whipped 6-1 on home ice in Game 7.

Though some changes were made, they were not nearly enough and Dallas is the worst wager in the NHL at -8.6 units (as of 12/3). The problem is two-fold and is why hockey bettors need to be on the alert, at least for now when making NHL picks to bet against the Stars.

GM Jim Nill played a hunch that a collection of young defensemen were ready for the rigors of the NHL and let three veterans leave. To this point Nill's calculation is wrong, dead wrong, with Dallas the worst team on defense, permitting a scary 3.40 goals a game. You don't have to follow the NHL odds at A+ rated BetDSI to understand how bad the defense has been. Watch the Stars for parts of a game or two or even watch the highlights and see how easily the opposition scores.

This compounded with the offense down to 2.52 goals a game, from first to 18th, a precipitous drop for certain. Last season when the offense was in high gear, Dallas players believed they could score to win, but now those same players are pressing and not getting the puck at the same angles in the transition game with players unfamiliar with one another.
