NHL Betting: Thursday Picks
The NHL odds makers had a half day yesterday, but now it’s the busiest night of the week. So, let’s see if we can find some winners.
Record: 10-11 (-100)
Los Angeles Kings at Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have had a decent start to the season. They went to Vancouver and left with a 3-2 shootout win. It was a gutsy performance in a contest where many just assumed Vancouver would roll. Then, the Oilers came home and were bombed by the San Jose Sharks 6-3 but when you have a closer look, it was really just one bad period. The Oilers gave up six goals in the first and that pretty much sealed it.
I’m not entirely sold on the Kings just yet. They appear to be half-asleep in the early part of the season. They just lost in Colorado, so they are more than capable of losing in Edmonton too. The Kings look like the Kings of old…meaning that they are again having trouble scoring. Their top lines have done nothing so far this season and they’ve compiled a total of three goals in two games this season. On top of that, their defense has been questionable, as Jonathan Quick has allowed eight goals in two games.
I would consider this a small play but I do like the Oilers in this spot as a home dog. I’m not sure that the Kings deserve to be road favorites at this point in the season.
NHL Picks: Oilers +115 at BetOnline
Nashville Predators at St. Louis Blues
I was on the under the last time the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators met (earlier this week) and it didn’t turn out well. The final score was 4-3 as the two teams needed seven goals and a shootout to decide things.
I’ll try it again as these two teams tend to play unders and there is little reason to believe that’s going to change. The Blues still have stellar net-minding and so do the Predators. Meanwhile, the offenses are in question on both sides –particularly on the Nashville side of things.
With the under climbing up all the way to +118, the value is too good to pass up. Even with a low total of five, I like it for my NHL Picks.
NHL Picks: Under 5 at Bovada
Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars
I’m going to stick with the Chicago Blackhawks as they have been one of the more impressive teams to start the season. They’re a perfect 3-0-0 with two of those wins coming on the road. They have topped the Kings, St. Louis Blues and Phoenix Coyotes. More impressive has been the fact that they’ve scored 14 goals in three games (at least three goals per outing).
Next up is a matchup with the Dallas Stars, who have won two of three but haven’t impressed me as much. They scraped out wins over Detroit and Phoenix, and lost to Minnesota. The Stars offense is inconsistent and they should have a tough time keeping up with the Blackhawks.
Since it is a reasonable price, I’ll lay the juice with Chicago.
NHL Picks: Blackhawks -125
