The NHL odds for this Thursday night match-up between the Buffalo Sabres and the Philadelphia Flyers are out. Who should we be backing with our free picks here?

Don’t look now but the Philadelphia Flyers, who had a disastrous start to the season, are starting to put it together. They’ve won four of five and have plenty of steam heading into their meeting with Buffalo on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Sabres are still the worst team in the NHL. They’ll need a big effort to derail the Flyers momentum.

The Buffalo Sabres can win because…

They’ve been respectable recently. Up until November 5th, the Sabres were just 2-13-1. Over their last seven games, though, they are 3-4-0, which is reasonable. Some of those wins have come against quality opponents like Toronto, San Jose and Los Angeles. They’re more than capable of springing an upset.

Laying -210 on the NHL odds with the Flyers should make you nervous. Yes, they’ve been playing well but we’re talking about a team that has three more wins than Buffalo.

The Philadelphia Flyers can win because…

They’re playing their best hockey of the season. The Flyers have won four of five and people making their NHL picks are starting to see them play like they thought they would. Believe it or not but goaltending hasn’t been the issue for Philadelphia; scoring has. However, the team that ranked 28th in that category in October (1.82 goals per game) is finding their stroke. They’ve averaged 3.6 goals per game over their last five, which is why they are 4-0-1 in that span.

The Sabres allow 3.0 goals per game on the road and score a league-low 1.73 when they are away from home. As long as the Flyers can play with the same confidence they have over the last couple of weeks, this will be a breeze.

Outlook & Pick

I’m going to add Philadelphia to my NHL picks but I’ll lay the puck line. I can’t lay the -200/-210 know just how bad they were earlier in the year. They’ve played well recently and deserve a shot here but I’ll aim for a two-goal win and avoid the steep price tag.
