What does one make of this series? The Detroit Red Wings were sliding down the standings in the worst way until they finally woke up last Monday.

Since then, they’ve won four straight while outscoring their opponents 15-3.

Is this the team that we’ll see in the playoffs? If so, the Anaheim Ducks will face a very stiff test in the first round of the playoffs.

Before placing your bets, let SBR's 'NHL Series Betting Prices: Sportsbook Futures Comparison' help you find the best NHL odds on offer.

The Detroit Red Wings can win because…

They come into the playoffs hot. The Red Wings have won four straight and everything is working for them. They’ve scored 15 goals in those four games and given up just three. If Jimmy Howard keeps this up, the Red Wings will be tough to beat.

On the flip side, handicappers considering the Ducks for their NHL picks might have to be concerned with the fact that Anaheim has cooled off. The Ducks were 22-3-4 at one point this season but finished on an 8-8-2 run. Throw in the fact that the Red Wings won two of three meetings this season and the Ducks could be ripe for the picking.

The Anaheim Ducks can win because…

They have home-ice advantage, which will be quite significant in this series. The Ducks were 16-8 at home this season, which is pretty good, but what’s noticeable is just how bad Detroit was on the road. The Red Wings finished 11-13 in away games but were much worse than the record indicates.

The Ducks will also be comfortable going on the road as they were 14-10 away from home. They won their final three road games of the season while outscoring their opponents 9-2. If they play anything like the team that started the year so well, they’ll put the Red Wings to be easily.

Outlook & Pick

People examining the NHL odds might want to be careful betting the Ducks here. Sure, logic suggests that they advance but there is surely a seed of doubt. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if the Red Wings pulled a stunner.

It all depends on how the series starts. If the Red Wings open with a win, their confidence will grow and the Ducks confidence will continue to be shaky. The Ducks also have a dynamic of having two good goalies, which at this point in the year is more of a curse than a blessing.

I think the Red Wings payoff big time in the first round for our NHL picks and send out the Ducks much earlier than expected.
