The Kings are the defending Stanley Cup champions but they haven’t looked dominant in the regular season as they did in the playoffs last year.

Before placing your bets, let SBR's 'NHL Series Betting Prices: Sportsbook Futures Comparison' help you find the best NHL odds on offer.

The most intriguing first-round playoff series in the West is the St. Louis-Los Angeles matchup. The Blues look very dangerous as they’ve put together a very good month of April and are peaking at the right time. Don’t be surprised if the champs are sent packing early on.

The Los Angeles Kings can win because…

They owned St. Louis in the regular season. The Blues are known as a defensive-minded, stingy team. When they are winning, it’s because their defense and goaltending are leading the way. However, the Kings had no problems breaking through in the three times they met in the regular season as they scored at least four goals in each of the three meetings (14) while winning all three matchups. If the Blues are going to be dragged into a scoring contest, I don’t like their NHL odds .

The Kings appeared to be primed for a run as goaltender Jonathan Quick is enjoying his best month of the year. He had a 2.28 GAA and a .917 save percentage in April, which were his best numbers of the year in each category. If he leads the way, the Kings will following him to Round 2.

The St. Louis Blues can win because…

They look like the Kings from last season. The Blues were stumbling and bumbling throughout most of the season. However, the light bulb went on in April and this is a very dangerous team right now.

The Blues have won 12 of their last 15 games and the main reason for it has been goaltender Brian Elliott. He’s again playing like a Vezina Trophy candidate, winning 10 of 12 starts in April while posting a 1.30 GAA and a .947 save percentage.

This team is hot, confident and riding a stellar goalie. That could mean trouble.

Outlook & Pick

The Blues are going to do to the Kings what the Kings did to many teams last postseason: pull a stunner. While the Kings have the edge in talent, they just don’t look like they have the magic they did last year. No team in the NHL is playing better than the Blues right now, so take them to advance for your NHL picks.
