The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a bit of a funk and a matchup against the best team in the NHL might not help. They’ve lost four of five and will try to end their slump against the league-leading Anaheim Ducks on Monday. Who should we be backing with our free pick here?

The Anaheim Ducks can win because…

Pittsburgh is really struggling. Sure, they’ve lost four of five but when you take a bigger snapshot of their season, you’ll see that the Pens haven’t been quite right in the last month. They started the year 7-1-0 but are just 5-7-0 since. To the surprise of many, the issue isn’t

goaltending. It’s goal scoring. The Pens have tallied one goal or less in four of their last five. After averaging 3.88 goals per game in their

first eight, they have averaged just 2.08 goals per game in their last 12.

The Ducks have scored 71 goals this season, which ties them for the second-most in the NHL. They should be able to outscore the struggling Pens and cash in on the NHL odds on Monday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins can win because…

The Ducks are enduring their own struggles. People making their NHL picks should note that the Ducks enter Monday on a three-game losing streak with losses in Florida, Tampa Bay and Carolina.

Anaheim might be unstoppable at home (8-0-0) but they’ve been a different team on the road. They are 7-7 away from home and have lost six of their last nine road games. The Pens are still a respectable 8-3-0 at home this season, so they should be able to take advantage.

Outlook & Pick

Both teams are Stanley Cup caliber but as of right now, both are struggling. It’s hard to lay the juice with the Pens given that they’ve lost four of five and given the opponent, but it’s also hard to take the value with the Ducks given that they haven’t played well on the road recently.

Since both offenses have labored in the last little while, I’ll add the under to my sports picks instead.
