NHL Betting: Blue Jackets vs. Oilers

We’ve got a main event for the ages on Tuesday night as the Columbus Blue Jackets visit the Edmonton Oilers. If you had plans, cancel them. You won’t want to miss this NHL extravaganza.

If you can tell, that’s sarcasm. The Blue Jackets have just 17 points through 20 games, which puts them 24th in the overall standings while the Oilers are the second-worst team with just 12 points through 22 games. Can NHL games still end in a tie? That would be perfect for these two teams.

The Columbus Blue Jackets can win because…

The Oilers are atrocious at home. The Oilers have just one win at home in eight tries and if you’re doing the math, that makes them the worst home team in the NHL. What’s sad for the Oilers is that they actually won their second home game this season. That means they’ve lost six straight at home while being outscored 23-3 in the process. For whatever reason, they simply can’t generate enough offense at Rexall Place. Is that the type of team you want to add to your NHL picks?

The Oilers are the worst team in the NHL these days. Maybe as a home dog they are worth a shot but laying -110 on the NHL odds with them is just too risky a proposition.

The Edmonton Oilers can win because…

Columbus sucks too. The Blue Jackets ended a three-game losing streak on Sunday with a win in Ottawa but that was just their second win in their last 10 games. We’re talking about a team that started 5-5-0 and had hopes of making the playoffs. Since then, they are 2-5-3.

The problem for Columbus is that Vezina Trophy winner, Sergei Bobrovsky, has been a very average goaltender this season. He has a pedestrian 2.72 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Columbus just doesn’t score enough to overcome those numbers. The Oilers will counter with Devan Dubnyk and while he hasn’t been great himself, he’s played better in November (3.03 GAA, .902 save percentage) than he did in October (4.01 GAA, .878 save percentage).

While the Oilers struggle at home, the Blue Jackets don’t play well in Edmonton either. They’ve lost five straight in Edmonton and the Oilers are 18-4-1 all-time when hosting the Blue Jackets. That’s why the Oilers are worth adding to your NHL picks.

Outlook & Pick

This is a tough call all the way around. The Oilers don’t deserve your money but neither does Columbus. -110 is a fair price as they are two equally-matched, crappy teams right now. If you’re betting the side, I would lean with the Oilers given their success in this series. However, the pick that I’m going to play is the under. The Blue Jackets score less on the road than they do at home, while the Oilers have scored just three goals in their last six home games. Even with bad goaltenders manning the pipes, I think both offenses well help us keep this game under the 5.5.
