NHL Picks: Flames +115 to win straight up; OVER 5.5 (+115)

Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

Tampa Bay Lightning (19-6-4)
The Tampa Bay Lightning returned to the win column with a 3-2 shootout win over Minnesota Wild at the weekend. The win has the Bolts improving to a 5-4-1 mark in their last ten games but, importantly, snaps a two-game home skid to close 2015.

Over the last six games, the Lightning have been at home and split those 3-2-1 SU. Their last six road games went 4-2 SU but culminated on a 5-2 loss in the nation’s capital. Overall, road form on the season stands at 9-8-2.

As it is, the Bolts are sat sixth in the Atlantic Division, eight points adrift of division leaders Florida Panthers. To say, it’s been a rather disappointing season is an understatement.

Calgary Flames (18-18-2)
The Calgary Flames are off to a winning start in 2016 beating the Avalanche 4-0 at the weekend and improving to a 6-4-0 record in their last ten games. Overall, things aren’t looking promising as they are sat in sixth place in the Pacific division with an 18-18-2 mark.

Nevertheless, they are coming off a winning account and form over the last few weeks has been positive, which augurs well for a push in 2016. Importantly, the shutout was the first shutout for Karri Ramo on the season (fifth career shutout), who was outstanding between the posts for the Flames.

In recent months, home form has picked up for the Flames. They are a solid 12-7- at home compared to a subpar 6-11-2 road record. Indeed, home form is the charm for the Flames so far on the season.

NHL Betting Odds Trends To Spot
The Tampa Bay Lightning enter this game as the decisive favorite on the NHL odds board, trading at -135 to win straight up at bet365. On the puck line, they have the -1.5 edge but the juice is a telling +215. On the flipside, the Flames are trading as the +115 home underdogs. Against the puck line, they are +1.5 (-260). The UNDER 5.5 is favored at -135 while the OVER is matched at +115 NHL odds at bet365.

The Bolts boast a 3-0-1 OVER record in their last four games when their opponent allows 2 goals or less in their previous game (Calgary conceded none against the Wild). The Flames boast a 4-0-1 OVER record in their last five games against Eastern Conference opponents. Importantly, the Flames have lost just two of their last nine home games in the month of December. In fact, they were riding a seven-game home winning streak in December before losses to Anaheim and Los Angeles to cap off 2015. That run of home form stretches to an eleven game winning streak at home going back to October 30 and a 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

NHL Betting Verdict
If there were one guiding NHL betting trend, it’s Calgary’s home form that could be the decider in this game. They’ve played well at the Scotiabank Saddledome in the last two months, save for the hiccups ahead of New Year. Earlier in the season, the Flames lost to the Bolts 3-1 in Tampa Bay. With momentum from the weekend and home ice advantage, we like the Flames to defy the NHL odds and take the win. Take the Flames as the nominal home underdogs on your NHL picks.
