Our resident NHL handicapper shares his top two totals selections of the day. Join us in reading his insightful analysis on the games between the Rangers/Hurricanes and Penguins/Coyotes.

New York Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes 7:05 PM ET
According to the NHL betting odds at Pinnacle, the total in this game is 5.0. This will be the fifth meeting of the season between these Metropolitan rivals, and none of the previous four has gone over the total. Those four contests produced an average of 3.5 combined goals per game being scored.

Low Scoring Home Games for Carolina
The Carolina Hurricanes have seen just seven of their thirty-four games (20.6%) at home this season go over the total. The Canes have gone under the total in each of their previous four games overall. During those four contests they were shutout on two occasions, and scored a pathetic two goals combined.

Suffocating Defense by Rangers
The New York Rangers have allowed a paltry seven goals combined in their last eight games, and each of those contests went under the total. New York has allowed one goal or less in each of their previous six games, and has shutout their opponents on two of those occasions. The Rangers probable starting goaltender tonight is Cameron Talbot, and he’s been absolutely impenetrable of late. Talbot has compiled a sensational .975 save percentage during his previous five starts.

NHL Pick: Hurricanes and Rangers to go under the total of 5.0 at Pinnacle.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Arizona Coyotes 9:05 PM ET
The NHL betting odds at Heritage have a posted total of 5.0 for this contest. This will be the first meeting of the season between these teams, and both encounters last year stayed under the total.

Both Teams struggling to score Goals
You may be surprised to know that the Pittsburgh Penguins have scored one goal or less in six of their previous seven games. As a matter of fact, they’ve tallied just two goals combined during the last four games, and were shutout in two of those contests. The Penguins have seen each of their last four games on the road go under the total.

The Arizona Coyotes have scored only a combined five goals over their previous six games. The Coyotes have gone over the total only once in their last nine contests, and were shutout on two separate occasions. On a positive note, tonight’s slated starting goaltender Mike Smith has compiled a superb .944 save percentage during his prevous four starts.

This non-conference game tonight has all the ear marks of a low scoring affair. Sometimes the best policy is to just keep things simple. That’s just what I’ve done in this case when making one of my NHL picks for Saturday.

NHL Pick: Pittsburgh and Arizona to go under the total of 5.0 at Bookmaker.
