Toronto Maple Leafs (19-24-9)
Bottom stragglers Toronto Maple Leafs descend on the Edmonton Oilers tonight, looking to snap a two-game losing streak. If the NHL odds were any indication, it’s a long shot.

Odds makers opened with the Maple Leafs only marginally disadvantaged at +119 NHL odds, but that price quickly swelled up a high of +150 at bet365. That Deon Phaneuf has left the Toronto Maple Leafs to go and play for the Ottawa Senators might have something to do with this remarkable rise on the NHL odds board. Then again, form hasn’t been anything to cheer about this season.

In their first game without their stalwart leader on the ice the Leafs succumbed to a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. The loss followed a 6-1 walloping by the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, marking a two-game losing streak ahead of their date with the Oilers on the road and their sixth loss in the last eight games. In fact, delving deeper into form, the Leafs strike a woeful pose with just three wins in their last 14 games.

Overall, the Leafs are 19-24-9 on the season with an 8-8-7 mark at home and an 11-16-2 mark on the road. Where the stats are increasingly concerning is on goal differential, which is a negative 24 after scoring just 125 and conceding 149.

Edmonton Oilers (21-29-5)
Just as Toronto props up the Atlantic division, the Oilers prop up the Pacific division with a 21-29-5 record, which includes a so-so 14-10-1 mark at home and a subpar 7-19-4 mark on the road. Yet, despite their rather lacklustre results this season they enter this game incredibly favored on the NHL odds board. Some might say almost overrated.

Odds makers opened the Oilers as the -131 favorites at Pinnacle but those NHL odds swelled up to a high of -170 (bet365). Most online sportsbooks hang the Oilers around the -160 to -165 range. Either way, those NHL odds do seem a touch generous considering form is nothing to cheer about.

The Oilers ride a three-game losing streak into tonight’s clash with the Leafs, which includes losses to the Canadiens (5-1), Islanders (8-1) and Devils (2-1). Simple maths, they were outscored 15-3 during this latest skid, a happenstance that has their goal differential swelling to negative 30 with 137 scored and 167 conceded.

The Oilers boast two wins in their last eight games, four wins in their last ten games. Earlier in the season, they lost to the Leafs 3-0 in Toronto.

NHL Betting Verdict
Not only is this an all-Canadian affair but also a bottom of the table affair. Neither team is enjoying any semblance of positive form at the moment to warrant an NHL pick, but as far as the NHL odds go the Oilers are remarkably overrated at their lofty price, don’t you think? Given they’ve been sorely outplayed, outscored and outmuscled in recent games, it’s a wonder they are so favored. Granted those losses came on the road. Still, they are 2-3 SU in their last five home games, all while scoring 11 and conceding 11. All that s enough to put us off betting on the home win. Taking Toronto to win outright is a bit of a longshot NHL pick, but could be worth the tickle at the current prices trading. For our money, our choice NHL pick is the OVER 5.5 at +130 at 5Dimes.
