The Calgary Flames are making their fourth stop on a six-game road trip on Wednesday as they’ll visit the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks are a massive favorite on the NHL odds but maybe there’s some value with the dog here.

The Calgary Flames Can Win Because…
They actually compete pretty hard against the Blackhawks. Corey Crawford is just 1-0-2 in his last three versus the Calgary Flames. While he’s got a 1.95 GAA in those games, as a bettor, you don’t really care how he plays if the Blackhawks are costing you more than -200.

The Flames should be able to better match up in net with the Blackhawks these days now that they’ve upgraded to Jonas Hiller. He’s 4-2-0 with a 1.82 GAA in his last six against the Blackhawks.

The Chicago Blackhawks Can Win Because…
The Flames haven’t fared well against quality teams so far. The Flames have wins versus the lowly Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, but they have two losses against the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues. The Blackhawks will be the toughest team they’ve faced and they won’t be up to the task.

The Flames are also in a back-to-back on the road stopping in their third city in five nights. Fatigue shouldn’t be a factor this soon but they went to overtime last night in Nashville. They won’t be 100% fresh and that’s what they’d need to be at to beat the Blackhawks.

Outlook & Pick
It’s early in the season but the Blackhawks are one of the biggest favorites we’ve seen on the NHL odds. Some places opened the line up at -230 (Pinnacle) while other shops had it as high as -275 (SportsInteraction). They deserve to be favored by this number but it’s simply too much to lay here – especially when you consider Chicago is only 3-2-0 in the last five meetings.

That being the case, we’ll look to the total and aim for an under with our NHL picks. Hiller has decent numbers against the Blackhawks and Crawford the same against Calgary. Four of the last five meetings between the teams have stayed under the number. Chicago hasn’t given up more than two goals in their first two outings and we’ll look for that to happen one more time on Wednesday and keep this game low scoring .
