Avalanche at Madison Square Garden
The Rangers will host the Avalanche today at Madison Square Garden in New York with the opening puck drop slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds, the Rangers are a -160 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. These teams split their two meetings a season ago with each club winning on home ice.

From Biggest Surprise to Shocking Disappointment
The Colorado Avalanche made the biggest turnaround of any team in the NHL during the 2013-2014 campaign. They went from the bottom of the NHL standings in 2012-2013 to winning the Central Division title a year ago, and also finished 2nd overall in the Western Conference. Things have taken a 360-degree turn once again, but this time for the worse. Colorado has began the season by going 4-13 against the money line, including a dismal 1-8 on the road. They’ve been outscored in those 9-games by an average of 1.9 goals per contest, and are coming off a 6-0 blowout loss on the road versus the Islanders on Tuesday. Colorado has seen each of their previous 4-games go over the total, and they allowed 18-goals combined in those contests.

Coming off an Impressive Win
The New York Rangers entered Tuesday’s game against the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins as losers in 4 of their previous 5-games. They showed why they’re the defending Eastern Conference champions by routing the Penguins 5-0, and in doing so, temporarily silenced the critics. Henrik Lundquist will be in goal again this evening, and he was outstanding in the win over the Penguins, stopping all 33-shots on net to earn his 2nd shutout of the season. Another encouraging sign for the Rangers has been the recent success of their power play. After going a miserable 2-for-28 with the man advantage during the first 10-games of the season, the Rangers have 4-for-14 on the power play over the last 5-games.

NHL Betting System
Any home team facing a non-conference opponent with a total of 5.5, coming off a home shutout win has seen 66 of those 94-games (70.2%) go under the total since 1996. Keep that in mind before making your NHL picks on this matchup.
