The Detroit Redwings are in a playoff spot but they don't have a spot in my top NHL picks. However, a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks may change that.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings
Original six members collide for the first of two meetings in five days. Since moving to the Eastern Conference in the 2013-14 season, the Redwings have beaten Chicago three out of four games and have beaten the Central 18 of the last 27 meetings.

The Wings currently have won three straight games while collecting a point in five straight after Tomas Tater scored the game winner to beat the Dallas Stars, 3-2, Monday in overtime. Tatar has scored in both of the meetings against Chicago this season.

Tatar's play, three points in his last two games, has given the Wings some depth on the third line along with Gustav Nyquist who has found the score sheet twice in as many games. Centermen, Riley Sheahan, will never win a scoring race but he is a guy who can play the wing too. With their top four forwards not scoring much you could say that Tatar's line is carrying the offense.

Meanwhile, Chicago hasn't played since a huge victory, 3-2, over the NHL leading Washington Capitals. It was only their third win in their last eight games. The combination of a layoff and a satisfying victory could provide an opportunity to back the Wings. My guess is that bettors will back the Blackhawks in the NHL odds boards because the public bets what they just saw.

The biggest challenge in making trade day deals is not make good deals but making good deals that don't interrupt chemistry. I need to see better chemistry before backing the Hawks again against quality competition. Dale Weise, another addition, is having visa problems so that will be another adjustment when he finally makes his way to Chicago. Tim Jackman will see his first action after coming over from Anaheim.

Petr Mrazek is expected to make his first start in goal for Detroit. Mrazek has had a fantastic year featuring a 24-11-6 record with a 2.10 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. Mrazek is as cool as it gets under pressure. He's getting fantastic special teams in front of him as the Wings have killed off 17 straight power plays.

Betting Analysis
On the man advantage the Wings have presumably broken out of a huge power play slump with two man advantage goals against Dallas including the game winner from Pavel Datsyuk.

The Wings have always been a team I've counted to give a strong effort when playing two games in three days. Jeff Blashill has his team conditioned well which reflects on their 19-7 record in their last 26 when playing on one days rest. It also speaks to how quickly the coaching staff can get prepared for an opponent on short notice. My NHL pick is the home team is this series, because they have won four of the last five in this series.
